For the first time in the organization's 10-year existence, the North Halton Twisters will have a representative in the International Silver Stick Finals after the Midget BBs took top spot at a regional qualifying tournament in Pembroke recently, allowing just three goals against in four games. The Twisters showed a flair for the dramatics in winning the Silver Stick qualifier, earning three onegoal victories and a tie en route to the championship. Siera Pellizzari blasted home the winning goal in the final against North Bay on a slap shot with just over two minutes remaining in the third period. "That was the best competition we've faced all year. Every game was tightly contested with good defensive play and at that level, it always seems like it's a one-goal game," said Twisters' head coach Paul Morrow, whose team is in first place in the South West Girls' Hockey League with a 12-1 regular-season record. "Our goalies (Trish Dalli and Amanda Olar) really hadn't been tested often before this but both of them won games for us in Pembroke. It was just really good hockey to watch." The North Halton squad now moves on to the International Midget BB Finals Feb. 2-4 in Sarnia. With a core group of players that has been together for four years and won a provincial title at the Bantam C level, the Twisters have also posted tourney victories this season in Clarington and at their own event here in November. The win in Pembroke was the team's 10th tournament championship in 15 tries over the past four seasons, losing in the final on three other occasions. Twister squad headed to Silver Stick Georgetown will host doubleheader for top prospects EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer After a lengthy run at Bramalea's Victoria Park Arena, which has hosted the OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League's Future Stars Game for the last 20 years, Georgetown's Mold-Masters SportsPlex will play host to some of the best undrafted 16- and 17-year-old players in the province this Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Georgetown Jr. A Raiders submitted a bid to stage the game with the support of the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council and were selected by the league to be the host site based on successful experiences here with the 2003 and '04 OPJAHL all-star games and the 2005 Dudley Hewitt Cup championship tournament. "We've done a lot of things to make the game more attractive for the players and fans and we're making sure the scouts will be here in numbers," said local resident Finn Poulstrup, the OPJAHL's secretary. "This is a great fit for us and because we had two great all-star games here, we felt that we could do the same with the Future Stars Game. We have shared information with other teams in the league about how we have been able to host these types of games because they'd like to give it a shot as well." Although the Bramalea Future Stars events have been usually well-attended by scouts from universities and the Ontario Hockey League, some were shocked to be charged a $14 entry fee, something that won't happen in Georgetown, Poulstrup added. NHL Central Scouting will also be represented and 600 tickets have been pre-sold. Tickets are $9 each and are good for admission to both contests. The Raiders have three players set to suit up and each will play on different teams, with the President's and Beaumont Cups up for grabs. Sixteen-year-old defender Spencer Metcalfe of Oakville will play for the host West squad, winger Spencer Janes is on the North Division side and blueliner Adamo Miceli of Woodbridge will be with the East Division. Raider head coach James Richmond will coach the West Division along with regular assistants Lucky DeGrazia and Craig Teeple, while Mississauga Chargers bench boss Jay Anderson, a local native, will oversee the South Division entry. "We're projecting that we could play about 80 games by the time we get to April and hopefully the provincial championships," Morrow added. "If they keep winning, the games just keep rolling on into April. But the girls just love it and it's a great group to coach." The Twisters' organization will host its fifth-annual National Women's Hockey League regularseason fund-raising game at Georgetown's Mold-Masters SportsPlex on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m., when the Brampton Thunder takes on the Oakville Ice. Senior Rebels keep busy during break While most high school students were more than happy to just relax during the two-week holiday break, the Georgetown Rebels' senior boys' basketball team kept active on the court with some out-of-town exhibition games. Playing in front of more than 1,000 spectators at a four-team tournament near Syracuse, N.Y., the Rebels became the first Canadian entry to win the National Bank of Vernon Christmas Classic since its inception in 1991. Georgetown's seniors defeated the host Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Devils 47-44 for the championship as star guard/forward and game MVP Dalton Olinoski sunk a three-point shot with eight seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Centre Brett Neumann led all scorers with 19 points, while Olinoski and Spencer Troop dropped in 14 apiece. See REBELS, pg. 16
