SPORTS & LEISURE Sr. Rebels upend U.S. visitors in overtime The fourth-annual boys' high school basketball exhibition between teams from Georgetown and the Mishawaka Cavemen of the South Bend, Indiana area turned out to be an overtime thriller last weekend as the host Rebels posted their first victory in the friendly series. Centre/forward Spencer Troop led the senior Rebels to a 54-50 victory with 21 points and forced extra time by hitting a two-point shot with six seconds remaining in regulation. Georgetown improved to 21-5 in overall competition this season with the win, including an 8-0 mark in the Halton AAAA league's North Division. Coach Steve Pettit said that the Mishawaka seniors were likely the most inexperienced of the Cavemen teams the Rebels have faced, yet the visitors narrowly missed winning at the final buzzer, overcoming a 29-21 halftime deficit. Dalton Olinoski and Brett Neumann added 11 points apiece for GDHS. In the junior matchup, Mishawaka prevailed 52-33. Conor McKenzie was the Rebels' top scorer with 14 points. Next up for the senior Rebels is the Referees' Memorial Tournament in Hamilton Feb. 2-3. Also in Georgetown last weekend, Christ the King hosted the Halton Region qualifier for the Ontario Senior Boys' Catholic Basketball Championships, which will be held next month in St. Catharines. CtK's Jaguars faced eventual winner Assumption of Burlington in their first game and were knocked out of the single-elimination tourney by an 80-46 count. Dan Witzcak hit for 16 points to lead the home side. Assumption went on to defeat Loyola 63-39 in the semi-finals and then Holy Trinity 61-56 in overtime. Krysa's title shot on hold as Inferno goes up in smoke EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Georgetown's Shaun Krysa will have to wait a few more weeks to put his undefeated mixed martial arts professional fight record to the test after the Caged Inferno card scheduled to take place earlier this month in Gatineau, Que. was cancelled. The 26-year-old Krysa was told just a couple of days prior to the scheduled bout that his 155-pound APEX Promotions Canadian title fight was off and that he'd have to wait until the end of March for another shot at a national belt. What bothered Krysa was that he had trained hard through the Christmas holidays, passing up on many of the season's delectables, plus a large cheering contingent from Georgetown was set to make the trip to the Ottawa area. More than 50 family members and friends-- not including his 'mates from the Georgetown-based Boreland Combat Team-- had planned to see Krysa's fifth pro bout. "It was unfortunate but we've got other things lined up, so the extra time will help me get over a few minor injuries and be even better for the next one," he said. "You just have to look at it as a positive and the main thing is that I'm feeling better than ever, calmer, more relaxed." The 5-foot-9 Krysa decided to devote himself full-time to mixed martial arts in August and quit his digital printing and graphics sales job in order to train six days a week on strength and conditioning, boxing, wrestling, ju-jitsu and cardio-vascular work. He's convincingly won his first four fights since making his debut in March 2005 and his last ring appearance in early December at Halifax was brief and business-like, making his opponent tap out with an arm bar submission about 30 seconds into the first round. Professional mixed martial arts bouts have not been sanctioned in Ontario because of a lack of amateur infrastructure, forcing the Boreland fighters to travel out of province to find opponents. And Krysa, nicknamed "The Phenom," will no doubt See KRYSA, pg. 4 Georgetown Rebels' centre Brett Neumann gets an easy lay-up during the Rebels' 54-40 overtime win in an exhibition game with the Mishawaka, Indiana Cavemen last Saturday. Mishawaka players billeted with their Georgetown counterparts and also attended a Toronto Raptors' game in the fourth year that the schools have met up in friendly competition.
