Jaguars, Lords play to scoreless tie HERB GARBUTT Special to The IFP After another meeting between the Nelson Lords and the Christ the King Jaguars failed to determine a winner, Nelson coach Marc Messier suggested the teams settle the matter with their fists. "Maybe we'll just do rock, paper, scissors next time," Messier said after the Lords and Jaguars played to a scoreless tie in Tuesday's Halton high school girls hockey game. It just may come to that as there is apparently little separating the top three teams on the ice. Nelson and Christ the King, who tied 2-2 in their only meeting last season, entered the game as part of a three-way logjam (with Oakville's Loyola) atop the standings. Only one point separated the three and by the end of the day, although the order had changed-- with undefeated Christ the King (5-03) taking over first-- there was still only one point between the three. Loyola (6-1-0) and Nelson (5-1-2) shared second. Nelson, fresh off a win at the Bur Bear Hockey Tournament, was anything but fresh after five games in two days. Nelson goalie Cassie Chambers held the Jaguars at bay to record the shutout, turning aside good chances by Brittany Metcalfe, Brittany Westlake, Lana Munn and Lauren Gilpin, who plays rep in Burlington. At the other end Nelson struggled to generate scoring chances, although Jaclyn Conacher narrowly missed scoring the game winner when she beat Jaguars goalie Sonja Bradley, only to ring her shot off the post with five minutes to play. "You don't want to use it as an excuse but you could tell the girls were tired," Messier said. "(Ctk) is a good team, though. They've got depth, their goaltending is solid. They are as good as any Burlington team." And without a single Grade 12 player on their team, the Jaguars are probably not going to be leaving their spot at the top of the standings any time in the near future. "We've already got a couple of sisters of girls on the team coming up next year," said Jaguars' coach Mike Depelsmaeker. But both Christ the King and Nelson will have to avoid the playoff upsets that tripped them up in their bid for a Halton championship last year. The Jags fell to Assumption in the semifinals after a 6-1-2 season, while Nelson, after knocking off the four-time defending champion Notre Dame, were beaten by eventual champions, Loyola.
