Georgetown Seniors Centre changes bylaws, elects new executive FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre Members and friends are still talking about the terrific Valentine's roast beef dinner and dance held on Feb. 10th. Eleanor Murphy and Ann Flaherty and all their helpers did a wonderful job. If you weren't there you missed one of the best nights at the Centre in a long time A. Bowman won the Valentine basket, D. Inglis won the door prize, and the 50/50 draw went to L. Thomas. Congratulations to all the winners. The Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, February 13th was convened following the soup and sandwich lunch served by June Gilson and her committee. The hot soup felt great on the coldest day of the year. The AGM saw the Centre take some steps forward. It was noted that, following the meeting with the Town, the Centre's contribution to the Town was reduced from 33% to 25%. This is in line with Acton Seniors and will keep more of our money in the our coffers. They have also approved the employment of students to do some of the heavy jobs. The members present gave approval to several bylaws. Bylaw 3.13 now reads: The sale and consumption of alcohol at the Centre will be bound by regulations and policies of all authorities having jurisdiction over such events. The applications and policies and procedures of the Centre will be revised to ensure compliance with the above authorities regulations and policies. It was felt that the Centre would benefit from additional revenues received from rentals. These revenues will assist the Georgetown Seniors Centre to offset their financial commitment to the Town Of Halton Hills. Bylaw 2.3 now reads: Terms of directorship shall be three (3) years. Board members may stand for re-election for an additional three (3) year term, but thereafter must step down for a minimum of one (1) year. The president currently in place may stand for reelection by the executive committee for an additional one (1) year term. Not to exceed two (2) years. The Centre will benefit from the knowledge and experience gained by the board members during the preceding term. An addition under Bylaw 2.0 Board of Directors will read: Each director will have a designated committee to liaise with during their term. They will be responsible for communicating updates and information between the committee itself and the board of directors of the Centre. Bylaw 5.0 Committees, 5.2 will now read Committees shall: Prepare an annual plan including proposed budget for their term and provide the same to the Designated Board Liaison to review and bring to the Board of Directors for approval: Maintain a record of decisions taken; Secure Board agreement for all projects; Provide the Board Liaison with monthly reports of activities and changes in committee membership; Prepare and submit an annual budget. The AGM thanked the retiring board members: Clarence Gough, George Chadwick, John Daley, Eleanor Murphy, Lorne Hammond, and Duane Frerichs. Ted Thompson, chair of the Nominating Committee, presented a slate of officers for the 2007 Board of Directors. Nominations were received from the floor. From the ballot containing 11 nominees the members were asked to vote on six. The six successful new Board of Director members are Florence Riehl, Annette Francis-Cutti, Iris Johnson, John Day, George Chadwick, and Marilyn Mason. Following the election the entire Board of Directors met and elected the executive for 2007. They are President George Chadwick, 1st Vice President JD Hewitt, 2nd Vice President Marilyn Mason, Treasurer George Yahashi, Secretary Florence Riehl. We congratulate them all and wish for them success in bringing forth the Georgetown Seniors Centre in 2007. The Program Convener, Martha Stone, will be looking for ideas from the membership at large regarding new programs and fundraising activities. If you have an idea for either one give your suggestions to Martha. Make use of your Centre. I hope you had a chance to stop by our booth at the Georgetown Market Place on Saturday. A nice display of what we are about. Come on out to the Georgetown Seniors Centre! Get involved! Make new friends! Share in the good times! See what's going on at the Acton Seniors Centre on pg. 30
