April 20 20-Minute Makeover kicks off Earth Week fun Communities around the world will be celebrating Earth Day on Sunday, April 22 with a wide variety of activities. In recognition of the importance of improving our environment, the Town of Halton Hills is inviting the public to participate in a series of events between April 2028. The third annual Halton Hills 20-Minute Makeover is set for Friday, April 20. This year organizers hope to build on past participation levels and have an even greater impact. Businesses, institutions and schools will be sending their employees and students out to scour their grounds or nearby areas to remove unsightly litter. Jane Fogal, Chair of the Litter-Free Task Force, is enthusiastic about the addition of the 20-Minute Makeover to the clean-up calendar. "This gives businesspeople a target time to get out and clean up the irritating litter that is usually left for another day," said Fogal. Helen MacCormack, Chamber of Commerce representative on the Task Force applauds the Makeover. "It makes sense to engage the business community in our clean-up efforts because a clean, attractive environment is good for business and great for the community as a whole." Schools are again encouraged to participate. Last year 17 schools received certificates of appreciation at a Town council meeting. "Teaching kids that littering is unacceptable and getting their help in cleaning up their environment is essential. It is an important lesson for our youth," said Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette. Once again Town of Halton Hills employees will be leading the way with all departments being encouraged to select an area to clean up. Free garbage bags and gloves will be available from the Town Works Yard, The Acton and Georgetown BIA offices and the Chamber of Commerce office at 328 Guelph St. in Georgetown. Participating businesses and schools are asked to register with Pubic Works by calling 905-873-2601 ex 2610 so that the Town can acknowledge their efforts. Despite poor weather last year, Cindebarke Terrace residents, from left, Pat Fobert, Wayne Singleton, Judy Horner and Dale Auery combed their neighbourhood for trash as they took part in the annual Halton Hills Clean Up Day. Sixth annual Clean Up Day to be held April 21 On Saturday, April 21 hundreds of individuals and organizations will hit the streets, parks, trails, vacant lots, and rural roads stuffing trash into garbage during the sixth annual Halton Hills Clean Up Day. Everyone is encouraged to target a particular part of town that is important to them personally. It may be your own road allowance or perhaps a neighbourhood park or ravine. The Town does not have the staff available to clean up all of these areas and therefore are reliant on volunteers to take an hour or two out of their busy schedules to make a difference we can all appreciate. Families are particularly encouraged to volunteer as everyone, regardless of age, can make a valuable contribution. Many locations already have leaders who will be on-site with bags and gloves. Please call the Public Works Department to find clean up sites or to register the location you have chosen. Arrangements can also be made for the Town to pick up the collected litter. Please call 905-873- 2601 ext. 2610. High school students are reminded that they can use their community clean up hours towards their volunteer requirements if their time can be verified. Free garbage bags and gloves are available for participants at the Town Works Yards, the Acton and Georgetown BIA offices, and the Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce at 328 Guelph Street. The rain date will be April 28. Tim Hortons and Superior Glove are again sponsoring this event.
