General Committee for the Town of Halton Hills will conduct a Public Meeting to examine and discuss the proposed amendment applications to the Town of Halton Hills Official Plan and Zoning By-law and the related application for a Plan of Subdivision. The proposed amendment applies to the lands legally described as Part of Lots 12, 13 and 14, Concession 11 in the Town of Halton Hills. The subject site is located on the north side of Highway 7 (Guelph Street), east of McFarland Drive. The Applicant has submitted applications to amend the Town of Halton Hills Official Plan and Zoning By-law and for a Draft Plan of Subdivision for the above noted property. The Official Plan Amendment (OPA) is proposing to redesignate the subject site from "Residential - Low Density" to "Residential - Medium Density 1." The Zoning By-law Amendment (ZBA) is proposing to rezone the subject site to a site-specific "Fourth Density Residential-Special" (R4) Zone under Zoning By-law 57-91. The OPA and ZBA would facilitate the creation of a draft plan of subdivision to permit 108 single-family detached dwelling units and 77 on-street townhouse units for a total of 185 units. The subject site is designated Low Density Residential by the Town of Halton Hills Official Plan and zoned a site-specific "Recreational" (OS1) Zone by By-law 74-51. The area is currently serviced by a stormwater drainage system which outlets through stormwater management facilities to a tributary of the Credit River. Several sections of this tributary downstream of the stormwater management facilities are experiencing erosion, sedimentation and a reduction in water quality. There was a time when using your own canvas bags at the grocery store or composting your kitchen waste would have got you labeled as a "tree hugger". But now doing such things seems almost common place. Further more, terms like "carbon footprint" and "greenhouse gas emissions" have worked their way into our everyday vocabulary, and "being green" is no longer reserved for Kermit the Frog. The recent Green Living Show in Toronto is testament to the fact that the ecological impact of our daily routines is on the minds of many of us. The question, though, is "what can we do about it?" The Halton Hills Public Library has many wonderful books full of ideas and answers. Here is a small sample: As we head into what may be another hot summer, keeping your garden "green"-- in more ways than one-- can be a huge concern. Books such as Creating the Prairie Xeriscape by Sara Williams, Organic Gardening by Geoff Hamilton and Lawns for Canada: Natural and Organic by Don Williamson can help you plan a garden or lawn that requires less water and looks beautiful without the use of chemical pesticides or herbicides. Taking a non-chemical approach to daily living can also be applied inside your home. Organic at Clare Hanman Home is a collection of advice from various authors on how to keep your home environmentally friendly. From home dry-cleaning to making your own shampoo, this book includes recipes and tips for reducing your household's impact on the environment. Another aspect of green living involves being more conscious what we eat and the impact our food has on the environment. Jane Goodall's book Harvest for Hope: A Guide to Mindful Eating and Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma both examine our eating habits and agricultural practices, and how they can be changed to optimize not only our own health but the health of our environment. For more information on these or any other books at the library, visit our website, www.hhpl.on.ca, and let us help you on your way to a greener future. --Clare Hanman is a circulation supervisor at the Halton Hills Public Library BANKRUPTCY!
