Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, May 16, 2007 21 Local elementary schools fare well at Harker Relays Several elementary schools from Halton Hills took part in the annual Harker Relays track competition last week in Burlington and three were well represented in the team standings for bragging rights in Halton Region. Centennial Middle School's girls and boys combined to capture the Junior Division overall title with medal finishes in all four races. The junior girls 4x100m team, consisting of Kassidy Veenstra, Demi Swann, Rebecca Stewart and Darien Henderson, finished first in their race in 0:58.36, just a second off the Halton record. Lisa Laidlaw and Rachel Innes teamed with Veenstra and Henderson to place runner-up in the 4x400m event. On the boys' side, Centennial's foursome of Olin Flydorf, Connor Spears, Liam Gallagher and Adam Anderson beat out the second-place relay team from J.T. Tuck by nearly 10 seconds in winning the 4x400m Junior boys' race and also placed third in the 4x100m event. Silver Creek Public School of Georgetown South turned in a victory in the Intermediate girls' 4x100m, edging out Centennial for top spot. Silver Creek's Justine Rodrigues, Nicole Davison, Alex Rose and Connor Vincent were just 1.6 seconds ahead at the finish over Centennial's Aubrey Petrick, Sydney Pearson, Lindsay Poulton and Erika Hack. Stewarttown's 4x400m Intermediate girls' relay team raced to victory in a time of 4:43.36, just seven seconds off the Halton record. The 26-year-old Hill retired the first dozen Florida Marlins and issued only two walks before having to leave at the start of the sixth inning. The no-hitter was lost in the next inning, but the last-place Nats broke an eight-game losing streak and Hill's record improved to 3-3 with a sparkling 2.70 earned-run average in eight starts this season, giving up only two homers. After missing the entire 2005 campaign due to right elbow reconstructive surgery and the last half of 2006 because of soreness in the joint, the Nationals aren't taking chances with their sinkerballer and he will likely miss about a month. "To be perfectly honest, I wasn't even thinking about the no-hitter," he said on the team's web site. "I was more frustrated about the fact that I'm out of the game and not healthy again, more than anything." Hill's return date coincides with the Nats' visit to Toronto next month.
