Acton/Georgetown, Friday, June 8, 2007 7 Tree service worker goes to great heights to rescue stranded cat LISA TALLYN Staff Writer A Georgetown woman who orchestrated the rescue of a cat from a tree behind her home earlier this week is hoping the cat's owner will contact her and claim the pet that is now temporarily staying in her garage. Karen Sykes, of Reid Court, first heard meowing from a nearby ravine Saturday but could not see anything. It wasn't until the next morning when she heard the noise again, investigated, and saw a cat's tail flick about 50 ft. up a tree. Sykes said the cat was hanging onto a stump of a branch, and when her neighbour tried to capture the cat using a pool net, he scampered up another 10 feet to a fork in the tree. On Tuesday, after unsuccessfully trying to find someone who would rescue the cat-- including police and the Upper Credit Humane Society-- Sykes contacted Quality Tree Service, owned by Murray Anderson. Jeff Coxon of the company arrived shortly after and scaled the tree using spikes. He managed to get the cat and bring it safely down in a cloth bag. Sykes said the cat was very hungry but quite calm.
