10 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, June 13, 2007 Town eyes strategy to combat graffiti CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Town staff will investigate ways to combat the growing incidents of graffiti in the community. Wards 3 & 4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal directed staff to come up with some strategy at a recent council meeting after complaining about the amount of graffiti, also known as tagging, "all over the town" colouring such things as hydro and traffic signal boxes, stop signs and retaining walls. "There seems to be more and more of it out there and it's not disappearing," said Fogal. "And I'm afraid if we let it go there's just going to be more and more of it." Fogal suggested that standards of the town would drop if it's not dealt with and asked that a strategy be developed. Acton Councillor Jon Hurst said after a graffiti incident at the Rotary Club bandshell in Acton earlier this year, Halton Police are sensitive to the issue too. He suggested that people who spot the graffiti should report it to the police. At the same time, Fogal wants a crackdown on the proliferation of advertising posters tacked onto such objects as fences, hydro poles and streetlight poles. Fogal said it's unsightly, noting that a few years the Town made a concerted effort to get rid of them, and it may be time to do so again. "They are illegal," Fogal said. "They're in the rural area, and they're in the brand new parts of town ... they're all over. They're advertising for shutters, refrigerators, painting services... It's just cluttering up the town and it's not fair to the businesses who aren't doing that." Mayor Rick Bonnette added that it's a lot of out-of-town businesses that are doing this. Staff was directed to collect signs as they go about their town business and to call Halton Hills Hydro and to request their staff to do the same. *Based on an MSRP of $15,995/$21,695 on 2007 Spectra LX MT (ST5417)/2007 Sportage LX MT (SP5517).
