4 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, June 13, 2007 Greystone Cres. was one of the hardest hit areas during the powerful storm that cut across southern Ontario Friday afternoon, as many trees came down in the neighbourhood. One of the largest trees that overlooked the local playground on Greystone Cres. provided Jessica, 9, and Shelby Miller, 6, with some great tree climbing before the town came to clean up the mess. Clean up from fierce storm will continue LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The brief but intense storm that cut across southern Ontario Friday afternoon knocked down several trees and hydro lines in Halton Hills leaving many area residents without power. Town of Halton Hills Manager of Public Works Ted Drewlo said several staff members were out until 10 p.m. Friday clearing trees and branches off the roads. "There were a few big trees completely uprooted in Cedarvale Park and a number of trees broken on Delrex Blvd.," said Drewlo. Other areas of town where trees were damaged included Pennington Cr., Charles St., Edith St. Maple Ave. Argyll Rd. and Barber Dr. area, Prince St. and 22 Sideroad east of Hwy. 7. "A number of trees will require the expertise and equipment of a contractor. These trees will be made as safe as possible until the contractor is able to schedule this emergency work," said Drewlo. He said clean up work was expected to continue throughout the week. Halton Hills firefighters were also busy Friday afternoon dealing with 14 calls that came into the department as a result of the storm. Firefighters were called to several areas where hydro lines had come down including Maple Ave. and Charles St., Hwy. 25 and Hwy. 7 (wires were down on a truck), Main St. and School Lane in Acton, Maple Ave. and Trafalgar Rd., Sixth Line north of 17 Sideroad, Guelph St., Fifth Line and Mackenzie Dr. Those calls started coming in at about 4:30 p.m. and continued until about 7 p.m. Halton Hills Hydro General Manager Dan Guatto said a tree blown down in the storm in the Princess Anne Dr. and Trafalgar Rd. area knocked out a rural hydro substation causing a power outage in most of the north Halton Hills rural area and all of urban Acton. Power went out for the rural residents at about 4:20 p.m., but was restored for most of them by 5:45 p.m. Acton residents and business had their hydro restored by about 6:15 p.m. Guatto said extra staff members were brought in to deal with the aftermath of the storm, and they finished work at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. At that time Guatto said some individual customers were still without power because they were awaiting an electrician.
