10 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, July 6, 2007 Welcome Homecoming Visitors! Odd Job Squad goes into action next week The Odd Job Squad is an initiative created to help students find temporary work. The Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY)-Georgetown links students seeking temporary summer jobs and employers or homeowners seeking help. The SCCY has named the week of July 9-13, Odd Jobs Week in promotion of the Odd Jobs Squad and the great benefits it can provide to local homeowners. There's still a pool of enthusiastic young workers, willing and able to get the job done. Students sign up with the Odd Job Squad at the SCCY, indicating their work experience and availability. They are then notified when a job is available. Examples of odd jobs include lawn work, clerical duties, painting and flyer distribution. The duration of the each job can vary from a few hours to a few weeks. It is important for both students and employers to inquire about the valuable information on health and safety in the workplace available at the SCCY. SCCYs also assist youth by providing job postings, interview advice, résumé building and job search strategies. Employers can use the SCCY services to post summer job openings at SCCY locations across Ontario. Employers interested in using the services, and students looking for summer employment can contact the SCCYGeorgetown, 905-877-7797. July 27, 28 & 29 ONLY 22 DAYS TO GO! · Ideal location close to all events · Renovated bright and spacious guest rooms · Complimentary continental breakfast GDHS 120th Anniversary Reunion by Lois (Elliott) Fraser During Homecoming weekend July 27 to 29, there are many reunions taking place, and none will be more exciting than the 120th anniversary of Georgetown District High School. The school will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday July 28, with lots of activities for former grads to enjoy. There is no admission fee, so come and explore your old haunts and relive "the good old days". A few years ago, a group of parents, under the auspices of the Student and Parent Council, decide to start a "Building The Memories Campaign" to celebrate the history of GDHS, promote school spirit and promote the school's strengths. Founded in 1887, Georgetown District High School is indeed rich in history. Canada was only 20 years old when it opened! Here is a list of the activities we can look forward to at the Reunion. Brunch in the Cafeteria: There will be a catered brunch in the cafeteria (a hot and cold buffet) between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be ordered by calling 905-877-6966 and leaving a message at ext. 484. E-mail enquiries can go to Mary (Allworth) Fendley at gmfendley@cogeco.ca or to Ruth (Allworth) McMenemy at r.mcmenemy@sympatico.ca. All proceeds from the brunch will go towards the purchase of an electronic sign. "There are a lot of exciting activities at GDHS" says Sue Culp, Chair of the Campaign. "When we have a sign that can be changed on a computer in the office, we can change information in an instant and cover many more aspects of school life." Yearbooks on a CD: If you've lost your yearbooks in the shuffle of moving a few times or if you didn't order one at the time because you didn't think you'd want one in future (wrong!), you're in luck. Enter former GDHS student Bonnie (Hayes) Courchesne, who has taken every single yearbook and put them on a CD with musical accompaniment for all to own. Besides class pictures, other photos such as team sports and casual photos of students will be captured for you to enjoy at home. The CDs will be on sale for $20 at the reunion. Best Western Inn on the Hill 365 Guelph St., Halton Hills (Hwy. 7 & Delrex Blvd.) 905-877-6986 1-800-563-2476 www.bestwestern.com/ca/innonthehill Alumni Hall: There will be a special hall dedicated to Alumni of GDHS and you can purchase a brick with an engraved brass plaque for $50 at the reunion. Buy a brick for yourself, or buy one in honour of a special friend, a loved one or a friend who has passed away, a favourite teacher, teammate or coach. Due to future renovations at GDHS, the final location of Alumni Hall has not been chosen yet, but it will be sure to be a nice spot to leave a piece of your fond memories behind. School Tours: Volunteers from the current student population will guide former students around the school. Good job. Besides the gym and the cafeteria, I can't find my way around there. (Ummm, yes, I do know my way to the office...must have been a frequent visitor). Visit the Decade Rooms: Meet and mingle with classmates who went to GDHS in your era. Find out how friendly everyone is, now that nobody is looking for a life partner or trying to be the coolest dresser in town. The GDHS Building the Memories Campaign is looking for volunteers to work on the assembly of memorabilia. Do you have any sports gear, photos or school jackets you'd like to share? Volunteers will also be needed on July 28 all day or part of the day, so if you have some free time and would like to help make this 120th reunion a success, please call 905-877-6966 ext. 484 and leave your contact information. A third rail connection was the Toronto Suburban Railway, inaugurated in 1917. These brought plenty of business to hotels like the Railroad Exchange (still across from the railway station) THE STATION HOUSE, and the Clark and Bennett Houses, where traveling salesmen would rub elbows at the bar with local farmers who had come into town to sell their produce and pick up supplies. In 1922, at the age of 36, Bill Bradley established the Bradley-Edwards Electric Company that was located at the end of the Georgetown train station parking lot in a building later and still owned by McNally Limited. During a slow period in the appliance business, Bradley started a mail order seed business in order to keep his staff busy. By 1928 Dominion Seed House (DSH) was established and the business was relocated in 1936 to a portion of the family farm along Guelph Street.
