AHS students win design awards Acton High School Architectural Design and Drafting students with teacher Norbert Axtmann, made their annual pilgrimage to Hamilton for the Hamilton-Halton Homebuilders' Student Design contest last month and came home with awards. Judged by members of the construction and building industry, the students had to design a house and complete a full set of architectural working drawings required to obtain a building permit. Sixty-six students submitted entries from across the Hamilton-Halton area in two design categories. In the Small House category which consisted of a house design of up to 1,400 square feet, the second place, Award of Merit Award went to Megan Evans who received a cheque for $75, a plaque, and a certificate from the homebuilders. Evans was one of only five Grade 10 Acton students who competed against a field of 19 senior students to take the award. In the Custom House category which consisted of a house design of up to 4,000 square feet, First Place Honours Award went to Brandon Nixon who received a cheque for $150, a plaque, and a certificate from the homebuilders. This caps off a very successful year for Nixon, who previously won the provincial gold medal in Architectural Design and Drafting at the Skills Canada Competition in May.
