Acton/Georgetown, Friday, July 6, 2007 5 Hydro corridor twinning prompts SUMMER IS HERE ... CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONERS local residents to band together Install NOW and SAVE LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Approximately 100 landowners along the proposed widening of the Bruce to Milton hydro corridor have banded together to ensure their interests are protected. The group named Powerline Connections has hired expropriations lawyer Stephen Waque of Borden Ladner Gervais to represent them. Halton Hills landowner Bill Allison, chairman of the group who owns two properties that would be affected by the proposed 500 kV transmission line, said landowners all the way along the hydro corridor have become members. He said the organization is acting as a sort of umbrella group for sub-groups that have been set up in different areas. Allison said regardless of the fact the Ontario Power Authority has determined the new line is needed immediately "we still should be given fair representation of our rights and a fair analysis of the alternatives." Allison explained the landowners are requesting that a proper Environmental Assessment be done, and that alternatives to the proposed line on the east side of the current line be considered. The $635 million proposed project-- the largest expansion to Ontario's transmission system in 20 years-- would require widening the hydro corridor by about 175 to 200 ft., east of the existing line. It's planned to be in service by December 2011. "At the end of the day if there is property impact, then fair compensation should be given," said Allison. The group had preliminary discussions with Hydro One representatives last month and is in the process of putting together guidelines and policies regarding access to property and compensation they feel should be followed during negotiations with landowners. Allison believes the group has reached the stage where Hydro One should be taking it seriously. "Hopefully we will have a strong framework so individuals will be in a stronger position," said Allison. Hydro One received the go-ahead from the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) in March to get the approval required to build the transmission line from the Bruce Power Complex to Milton. The project requires approval under the Environmental Assessment Act and from the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). Gary Schneider, manager regulatory approvals with Hydro One, said they don't expect to get OEB approval for the project until early next year and Environmental Assessment (EA) approval by next fall (2008).
