Lilly's mom had rushed over to her neighbour Smith's apartment at about 11:30 p.m. last Tuesday evening frantically knocking on his door hoping he could help her baby who had stopped breathing after choking. Smith, a part-time Halton Hills firefighter nine months into his recruit training, told her to call 911 then raced to her apartment. Putting his recent CPR training to use, Smith scooped up the oneday-old baby, checked her airway, then held her facing downwards and performed two series of blows to her back. Smith said Lilly let out a little cry after the first session of blows. She released some mucus, but she wasn't yet clear of the obstruction. After the second set of back blows the obstruction of mucus Firefighter recruit Scott cleared, and to every- Smith with Lilly. The doctor said her vital signs were normal and she was sent home. She's been doing great since. Lilly's parents couldn't be more thankful to Smith for what he did. "We're both just very grateful that he was across the hall," said Lilly's mom, who declined to be indentified. "It was amazing how the training kicked in," said Smith, who joked they didn't use "real babies" in the training sessions.
