18 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, August 1, 2007 Raiders busy making moves EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer It's been a busy summer so far for the Georgetown Jr. A Raiders' management staff as just a few spots on the hockey club will be still up for the taking when training camp begins Aug. 20. New director of hockey operations Lonnie Freeman has signed several players and secured the return of a couple of important parts of last year's squad, which made it to the OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League's West Conference finals before falling to Hamilton. Defenceman Evan Zych of nearby Kilbride has been named team captain after being acquired late last season from the Milton IceHawks. The 18-year-old, 5foot-11, 185-pound blueliner put off his scholarship to a university in Massachusetts for a year to patrol the Raider blueline. Veteran winger Matt Carter of Mississauga will return for his final year of junior, after netting 27 goals and 64 points with Georgetown in 2006-07. Freeman is awaiting word from goaltender Marc Stuart, who is at home in Dallas pondering post-secondary school opportunities, or a return to Georgetown for his last season of junior eligibility. Most notable among the new signees is Georgetown resident Andy Bathgate, a 16year-old centre who was drafted in the third round by the Ontario Hockey League's Belleville Bulls in May. The 5foot-11, 165-pounder was split between pursuing a U.S. scholarship or signing with Belleville, but has decided to embark on the college route after taking a tour of Northeastern University in Boston and will remain at home to play for the Raiders. Halton Hurricanes' graduate David Milne, an 18-year-old, 6-foot-1, 205pound centre from Erin, was acquired from the Guelph Jr. B Dominators, while the Raiders also dealt away a couple of players from last year's squad. Winger Jeremy Whelan was sent to the Hamilton Red Wings in exchange for 17year-old Lukas Ciotti, a 5-foot-8 180-pound winger who starred for the Mississauga IceDogs' midgets last year. Defender Adamo Miceli is headed for the RBC champion Aurora Tigers in a cash deal. Rookie winger Spencer Janes returns to Milton as compensation for the Zych trade. Other confirmed signings include: · Blueliner Robert Brennan was captain of Michael Power high school's varsity team as a Grade 10 student and led the Jr. Canadiens' midgets last year as well. He's a 5-foot-11, 195 pounder and hails from Etobicoke. · Luke Reda, son of TSN on-air host Gino, a 5-foot-10 220-pound left winger from Mississauga who played for the Don Mills Flyers midgets last year. · Paul Yovanic, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound left winger who has major junior experience with Kitchener and Drummondville of the Quebec league.
