Town needs bylaw to control felines Dear editor, As a dog owner I have the responsibility to provide care and control of my dog. When will Halton Hills enforce the same bylaws for people with annoying outdoor cats? I have a three-year-old grandson who was recently bitten and scratched badly in Acton by one of these socalled "outdoor" cats that roam in everyone's yard but their own. My grandson had to be put on antibiotics to treat the infection. I find it hard to understand why cats do not have to have tags and up to date rabies shots. I have received two letters in five years I have owned my dog reminding me she needs her rabies shots. The owner of this cat had to put the cat in her house under a 10-day quarantine. Outdoor cats kills birds, mice, squirrels etc. which all carry diseases, but man's poor best friend has bylaws and rules. If this cat had been on a leash, like a dog has to be, my grandson wouldn't have been bitten and scratched and suffered the pain he has from this cat that didn't even have up-to-date shots. Humane societies also wouldn't be overrun with unwanted cats if cats were kept indoors. Bylaws need to be enforced and owners of cats should be made to obey the same rules as owners of dogs. K. Leslie, Georgetown Teachers opened students' eyes with Humanity trip to Costa Rica Dear editor, I would like to send a big thank you to the two Georgetown District High School (GDHS) teachers-- Mrs. Sanga-Bosland and Mrs. Edge-- who participated wholeheartedly in the Habitat for Humanity trip to Costa Rica that took six GDHS students on an experience of a lifetime. From the very beginning, these two teachers instilled an interest in humanity and world issues. The Habitat experience opened the students' eyes to a new and different part of our global world. I believe that these six young Georgetown residents, with the help and support of neighbours, friends and fundraising events, have a new awareness of cultural diversity and will continue to make a conscious choice to make a difference. Something we all need to think about. Kim Thrush, Georgetown Owner laments loss of Mittens Dear editor, On July 9 our cat, Mittens, was struck by a vehicle on Raylawn Cres. And was left there to die. We searched for her all morning and as I sat on my front step waiting for her to return the mailman informed me there was a dead white cat under a tree further up the street. It was our little Mittens. Raylawn Cres. is a long street with only one stop sign. Drivers fly up and down this street as it were a highway. There are a lot of children who live on this street, including mine, who play freely in their front yards. Whoever hit Mittens that morning and coldly left her there to die, should thank God it was not one of our children. Slow down. What a fabulous weekend it was, filled with memories, friendship and enthusiastic community spirit. Michael Simpson, Georgetown Dear editor, I've watched and read with interest all about Halton Hills' focus on recycling. Each household is being asked to tighten up and reduce, reuse and recycle. I agree. But what about our local Halton Hills businesses? Except for a few of the big chain franchise operations, almost none of the local restaurants has a proper recycling operation. Some only manage to crunch up a few cardboard boxes, all but ignoring the cans and plastic. Most won't even discuss the issue.
