12 Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 11, 2007 Only one candidate fails to file municipal election expense report CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer All candidates in the November municipal election-- except for one municipal candidate-- filed their election spending reports before the April 16 deadline. Wards 1 and 2 public school board candidate Sean Haefner and Wards 3 & 4 public school board candidate Mike Parkhill and Ward 4 municipal candidate Kevin Duggan did not file statements before the March 31 deadline. However, Haefner and Parkhill met the April 16 deadline; Duggan did not. He now has until July 3 to make an application to the court to file the document. If a KEVIN statement were not DUGGAN filed, a person would be ineligible to run in the next municipal election. The Municipal Election Act 1996 imposes expense limits for each candidate and requirements to record all contributions and expenses including goods and services. In his successful re-election bid Mayor Rick Bonnette, with an allowable expense limit of $34,312, received $14,242 in contributions and spent $13,000-- the surplus was filed with the Town of Halton Hills. Business contributions, greater than $100, came from: Maple Lodge Farms ($750), McNally Ltd. ($300), Johnson & Associations ($250), Park Motor Sales ($500), Swiss Can Properties ($750), MacKinnon Funeral Home ($200), Norseman Plastics ($250), Superior Glove Work Ltd. ($400), Greater Toronto Sewer and Watermain Construction Association ($750), Lawlor Company Marketing & Communications Ltd. ($742). A number of individuals also gave contributions over $100. His challenger, Robert Heaton, originally filed papers stating he had spent nothing on his camROBERT paign and had HEATON received no contributions. He then refiled documents before the April 16 deadline, stating his total campaign expenses of $5,000. However, Heaton still did not list who contributed that funding. Ward 1 Both councillors Jon Hurst and Michael O'Leary were acclaimed and both received and spent $100 each on their re-election bid-- equivalent to the nomination-filing fee. Ward 2 Election spending limit for Ward 2 candidates was $10,203. Councillor Bryan Lewis stated he received $1,000 in JASON contributions and HILTS spent $707. The contributions came from himself and his wife. His ward mate Joan Robson was her only contributor to her campaign, spending $946. Challenger Jason Hilts received $2,200 in contributions and spent $2,171. Hilts contributed $1,700, Carpet Palace ($300) and Atlantic Homes ($200). Ward 3 The biggest spender in the Ward 3 contest was newly elected councillor Dave Kentner who spent just under the spending limit of $13,269 for Ward 3 candidates. Kentner received $12,371 in contributions and spent $12,363. His contributors over $100 were: J.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home DAVE ($300), Georgetown KENTNER Toyota Sales ($200), Johnson & Associates ($500), Howell Pipe & Supply ($150), Fraser Direct Distribution Services ($300), Mountainview Residence ($400), Apple King Norval Inc. ($500), Herbal Magic Georgetown ($300), Eden Oak (Creditview) Inc. ($750), Georgetown Terminal Warehouse ($300), 1153539 Ontario Ltd. ($300), Sunny Acre Farms ($150), McNally Ltd. ($300), Arnold & Foster ($500), and J.V. Clothing ($200). A number of individuals also made contributions more than $100. Councillor Moya Johnson spent $2 more than she received in contributions ($3,700). Contributions came from Maple Lodge Farms ($300), McNally Ltd. ($300), Mattamy Homes ($400), Greater Toronto Sewer and Watermain Construction Association ($500). Johnson contributed $2,000 to her own campaign. Mike Davis received $4,261 in contributions and spent $3,605. Davis contributed $2,200 to his own campaign and received donations from Maple Lodge Farms ($300), Greater Toronto Sewer and Watermain Construction Association ($500) and TransCanada Energy Ltd. ($500). One individual provided inkind service. David Adair received only $1,450 in contributions but spent $1,800. Donations came from Greater Toronto Sewer and Watermain Construction Association ($500), Halton Commercial Printers ($750) and one individual. Phil McBride, who withdrew as a candidate, filed a statement listing no contributions and no expenses. Ward 4 Unsuccessful challenger Drew Riedstra spent the most in his bid for a Ward 4 seat. He received $9,000 in contribution and spent $8,996-- the DREW spending limit is RIEDSTRA $12,962. Contributions came from Drew's Trailers ($750), Leslie Rentals ($750), HTV Systems ($750), Raylawn Rentals ($750) and $6,000 out of his own pocket. Newly elected councillor John Duncan collected $8,274 in contributions and spent $8,192. Duncan spent $3,584 on his own campaign, and received donations from individuals and these businesses: Barker Real Estate Appraisals ($200), Upper West Hospitality ($750), Fraser Direct Distribution ($750), Dunlop Insurance ($100), Emerald Isle Bedroom Gallery ($250), McNally Ltd. ($300), Georgetown Toyota Sales ($200), Herbal Magic Georgetown ($200), and Halton Commercial Printers Ltd. ($750). Longtime incumbent Bob Inglis spent the least. He received $2,700 in contributions and spent $2,365. That included $2,100 from himself, and Maple Lodge Farms ($300), the Greater Toronto Water and Sewer Construction Association ($200) and one individual. Regional councillors Both Wards 1&2 and Wards 3&4 Regional Councillors Clark Somerville and Jane Fogal were acclaimed to their seats. Fogal contributed $1,100 to her own campaign and spent $381. Somerville's only expense was his filing fee, which is always returned to a candidate, getting more than two per cent of the vote cast. See SCHOOL, pg. 13 HELP END CANCER.
