The Farmer's Advocate announces the sale by public auction of the Scotch short- horn herd owned by Mr. Thomas Mercer of Mai kdale. Mr. Mercer's herd is con- sidered to be one of the best in tho north- western district of Ontario. The date of sale is fixed for February 24th at Mark- dale and will doubtless be well attended. Two cars of live stock were delivered at this station on Tuesday of last week but the railway could not ship them and they are still cm the buyers' hands at time of writing. Provision had to be made for them among the surrounding farmers until such time as- the railway can gee freights through. Week before last he got another bundle by express but last week no liains ran from Wednesday until Saturday and be was obliged to print only local news on job [japer which was carried in stock. The Advance was very fortunate in receiving its supplies with regularity, and getting all of last week's issue to iti subscribers before the storm. A serious accidentwas narrowly averted on Saturday at Munthaw's hotel, when the large stable roof came within an ace of collapsing under its heavy weight of snow. The plates and rafters were cracked, mak- ing reports which could be heard several rods away. All animals in the stable were hastily removed, props were Improvised, and a dozen men mounted the roof and cleaned the wet snow from it, thus preventing the threatened collapse. It was fortunate that the roof gave such ample warning and that it occurred in the daytime. At a crngregatioitai meeting held in the Presbyterian church last week it was decided to complete the purchase of a manse, the property .selected being that owned by Mrs. Sykes and known aa the Beecroft place on Pe^.er street. Tlie price was very reasonable and terms easy. Sufficient money was raised forthivith to make the first payment, after which the represet.tatives and their ladies partook of refreshments. The night was a badonu and the turnout from other congregations Wis not as large as had been hoped for, nevertheless a most pleasant evening was spent by those present.
