At Cava del Tlrrenl, In Italy, however, there han for a thousand years existed a peculiar form of plgeou-catching. It was Introduced in 892. says Mr. Her- bert Vivian in Italy at War, and It baa flourished ever since. At the begin- ning of every autumn gi'eat flocks of pigeons migrate from Siberia to Afrl- \ oa and pass over Cava and the Gulf of Salerno. They probably have other route.s. but Cava is the only place where they are waylaid with net.^i and slings. The aeasun Is at its height from the 15th to the 2r)th of October. The pigeon-catcliorj are mostly men of the lower middle class, who club to- gether to form six societies, or "games." A game usually con.slsts of three or four towers iind a clearing where the gets are set up. One tower â- . Is probalby a thousand yards from the • net, and the nearest perhaps seventy ! yards, but the distances vary. The towers are tall and slim, windowless ! and weather-beaten. There are steps : about halfway up the inside, and % j rickety ladder leads to the parapet at ' the top. Each society has also a neat | little clubhouse, usually near the chief j tower. In a merry mood the members take thelv places In the fresh morning air. Most of them are dressed In velveteen l coats, top-boota and pealted capB. Two . meu ascend each tower and the rest I are distributed among the nets. In each of the clearings stands a small \ hou.se from the centre of which rises : lull black mast. So make up your mind to economize and do it now.
