McTAVISH & Son Chevrolet Dealers FLESHERTON m 9 THE Flesherton Advance W. H. THURSTON, Editor AN UNFAIR PAPER The Owen Sound Sun-Times Ib ex- tremely unfair in its attitude towards Flesherton with regard to the Young- blutt case. A Barrie paper comment- ed on our argument to the extent of about a column, reading into it things that we never claimed or said, and criticising our attitude towards hos- pitals very severely. This lengthy article the Sun-Times gleefully re- produced, although it had never before referred to anything The Advance had said in connection with the matter. Just because Owen Sound has a hos- pitals no reason why it should assist in misrepresentation or suppression of facts which do not agree with its digestion. But that is the nature of some newspapers as well as of some people. REPUDIATION EDITORIAL NOTES The high school board is still silent on the agricultural department sub- ject. It looks as if they were closing the subject to the detriment of the community. • * * * Herbert Strongman was fined f5 and costs in Toronto this week for stealing a bar of soap valued at 9 cents. It would be well if the bench would mete out justice in the same prop^tion to the Home Bank oflfend- ers. HOME By One of The Old Boys THE LEADER IN FUN i The Farmers' Sun is now busily ex planing that the Inte government was i not a U.F.O. government. Why? All the farmers in this district at least thought it a U.F.O. government when they voted for it. Can it be that the recent invesigation has any- thing to do with the repudiation? If not, the repudiation would have been more timely had it come when the campaign was o«|^our years ago. At that period the Sun and candidates were all anxious to have it known as a U.F.O. Government, Every circus has its humorist to provide enjoyment and form a centre of attraction, and Homo had it!h "natural born leadler." wno man- aged to keep himself a topic of con- versation, and who happened to be ambassador-general to all the teeth of the countryside. He had come from the Dental Coll- ege and opene) up his office m the village. There was no depi^ssin? w&ii for patients, for there was no other tooth doctor there, save the one who visited once or twice n week, and from the start he had n gooa practice. It was also well behaved in that it was not allowed 1 1 interfere with one's natural desire to indulge in fishing and hunting in season. He was also bles.sed with a marv- ellous mechanical skill, which wns first exercised in btiilding a small motor launch to operate in n rather dizzy whirl on the cramped waters of the pond. So successful was the marine venture that he converted the chassis of an old buggy into a<renuine automobile. At any rate, the thing propelled itself along the level with fair success and down hills marvelous- Victoty Bond G>upons I* KicaM at |4SO,OOO,0OO »^IICM HwOWWWM WHEN your interest coupons on Viaory Bonds become due, deposit them in a Savings Account in the Bank of Montreal, where interest is paid on all de- posits of One EXjJlarand Upwards. Hills were more of an obstacle in the climbing, but even they were finally negotiated by the -occupants getting out jind pushing behind. Power was relayed to both rear wheel by belts from a drive shaft to a pully attached to each wheel. With- out bothering about license plates or anything like that (if indeed, there were licenses then) tho contraption was paraded before the admiring vill- age. But alas, that was in the days when automobiles were rarities oven in the largest centres, and when the mysteries of the differential gear were unknown to most but the automobile builder; and upon this rock was Home's first automobile wrecked. Up on turning a corner the theory of the "survival of the fittest" was given occular demonstration, and the weak- est of the two drive belts parted, whereupon the machine st»llcd. The problem was too great for solution, and the ambitious engine retired fin- ally to the quiet domesticity of pump- ing water. In the old days of the Queen's Diam- ond Jubilee and celebrations of the victories in South Africa, through the lead of the dentist Home did itself proud in the way of patriotic demon- strations* and the dentist 'ave new zest to the occasions by leading the younger set in their frolics. Combining a native ability to ver- sification with inborn harmony he im- proved parodies of the popular airs that thrilled the patriotic fervor of tho crowd â€" and even the small toy remembers them still as vividly as the hogs-heads of lemonade that were freely on tap. When life and love is young, it is easyâ€" indeed joyfulâ€" to let the bound- ing spirits have full rein, and being naturally endowed he led the social life of Home a meriTr danco, ana home was all the better for it. Man does not live to himself alone, and the dentist epitomized in his day the life that has scrgcd down the years in the little community at the cross roads of two arteries of travel. There, as elsewhere, is always to be found the social leader; and where he leads, as he did, through avenues of healthy fun, of merry sport, and of serious endeavor. Home may be wo;l- content indeed. The world may be a million years old for all we know; history goes back into the mists and shrouds of time; an earthly eternity of genera- ations beckons ahead â€" and the sup- reme moment is always with one, or just ahead. We only need to realize the slowness of time to get a grasp of the slowness of a man. And then, getting a grip on ourselves lest we should be too prideful, ^we gather in the wake of the "ilentists" who lead us in willing paths- and we are content. SCHOOL FAIR MATERIAL ' The Department of Agriculture, Markdale, regrets that the school fair j material has not been delivered to date. The delay was caused by the deep snow on the roads in the Mark- I dale district. Unfortunately the I.Easter holidays will further delay de- livery for another week, but we hope to have all material sent to the child- ren so that the teachers will have it when they return after the holidays. A FOOLISH ORDER In last week's issue we made men- tion of an animal shot by William Ritchie of Amaranth and brought to .Shelburne the following day in order to find out to what species it belonged As none here could identify the ani- mal it was taken to Orangeville. The Game Warden pronounced it a brush wolf and had the skin sent to Toron- to in compliance with the wolf bounty regulations that jequire the wolf skins to be sent to the fovemement by those claiming the bounty. We expect Mr. Ritchie to receive the bounto in the near future. â€" Shelbnrne Free Press. AUCTION SALE FARM STOCK, IMPLEMENTS, ETC. ROBERT H. The announcement that a Dominion Order-in-Council has been passed, making it a serious offence, punish- able with a $300 fine or a maximum of a year's imprisonmp.ii,, to wear any article of military clothing unless the wearer is on military duty or parade, is an example of the absurd lengths to which officialdom will go on occasions. There are thousands of ex-soldiers in Canada who for two or three years past have been utilizing old army clothing that otherwise would have gone to the rag buyer. Apparently however, some portly general with an exaggerated idea of military dig- nity has just found out about it, and henceforth the man who wears a pair of khaki trousers, a shirt, army socks, or even army underclothing, will be haled in to court and clapped into jail. Nothing more utterly foolish could be imagined. There may be some reason in forbidding the wearinf of a complete army uniform except when the wearer is on military duty, for di- sorderly or criminal conduct by such persons might bring discredit upon the army. To ban the wear in <» of all articles of military clothini^ because of some fetish about the sacredness of ; the King's uniform is an entirely ' different thing. The new Order-in- Council is a joke and ought to be re- scinded. â€" Farmers' Sun.
