Thurston & Son, Proprietors EUGENIA VANDELEUR FEVERSHAM PORTLAW CEYLON )^ n Quite a number pass through the village each day enroute to the Black Creek, but while some seem to be suc- cessful in bagging a number of suck- ers others come back with no luck. Altogether there are not nearly as many fish caught as in other years. A number from here attended the "Pumbells" at Owen Sound on the 9th, and report a good time. Miss Blanche Hammond and Ruth -Stuart of Kimberley visited their grandmother, Mrs. MucMuUen, over the week end. Quite an excitement was caused in the vllage on Saturday morning when it was learned that the Munshaw House was on fire. There being only a few men in the village at the time, the ladies all turned out and played no mean part in extinguishing the flames. The fire was caused by a spark from the chimney and the wind being so high the fire soon made headway, but was got under control by the bucket brigade. The men of the pipe line were phoned for and were on the scene in ten minutes from the time they received the message. Very little damage was done outside of the roof itself, which was badly burned. Russell McMullen has been running the caterpillar tractor back and forth to the station, moving the machinery etc., from the pipe line to head- quarters. Wesley Cooey has purchased a fine six cylinder McLaughlin special from Mr. Jackson of Markdale. Mr. and Mrs. Foester visited friends in Owen Sound on Sunday last. Mr. Don Carlos anl Mr. James of the H.E.PC. were visitors at the Mun- shaw House the past week. Mr. Edward Graham and family of Thombury visited with the former's father here on Sunday". Jas. Fawcett has purchased the res- idence of Robt. Haney directly across from the Orange Hall and moved his family therein the past week. The stave pipe line is expected to be completed the end of the week and the test will be put in very shortly. Mrs. E. A. Clarke of Portland, Ore., was a guest of her brother, P. Mun- shaw, the past week. W. E. Morgan is having some re- modelling done to his house. Quite a number attended the Masonic Lodge at Fesherton on Fri- day evening last. CHESLEY, JUNE 3RD The Bruce County Soldiers' Re- Union, 6th Annual Celebration, will be held in Chesley, on June 3rd. A big day of sports, horse races, base- ball tournament with teams from Owen Sound, Chesley and other places competing. Bruce Regiment Band and the Highland Pipe band of 31st Grey Regiment, Owen Sound, will furnish the music. Highland dancing, etc. Palmers' Midway Attractions on the grounds all day. Grand dis- play of Fireworks in the evening under the supervision of Hand & Co., experts of Hamilton. Marathon Re- lay Race for the Bank of Commerce Trophy open to the high schools of the vicinity. Something doing every minute from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Returned Soldiers wearing a ser- vice button admitted to grounds with- out charge. See large window cards. CAR ACCIDENTS HERE Two light car accidents occurred this week in this vicinity. While driving near Kimberley on Monday afternoon something broke on the steering gear of Dr. TurnbuU's car, and it unceremoniously headed for the ditch where it suffered consider- able damage. It took a few hours for repairs to be made. Tuesday at the noon hour when Mr. John Fawcett, mail carrier, was at the station a front wheel came off his car while crossing the railway track. No special damage was done although some hustling had to be done to get the car out of the way of the noon train, which was approaching. The man who trots around the room all night with a crying infant in his arms and happen.s to remember that of such is the kingdom of heaven is likely to backslide. B. H. Mr. Russell McMullen and his mother of Eugenia visited with Mrs. Hammond and Mrs. Stuart. Commercializing Mother's Day That Mother's Day, which was observed last Sunday, is being so commercialized by <he florists and others that the true sentment of the occasion is being threatened by greed, was quoted from the Angli- can pulpit here on Sabbath morn- ing last by the rector. Rev. R. Per- due, as being the open charge made by Miss Anna Jarvis, of Phiadel- phia, founder of Mother's Day and Prosident of the Mother's Day Inter- national Association commercia- ization of Mother's Day is grow- ing every year," says she. "Since parts of the world, many things have tried to attach themselves be- cause of its success." | "The white carnation is the emblem of Mother's Day because it typifies the beauty, truth and fidelity of mother-love. But it does not mean that people should wear a white car- nation. This false idea has led to florists flagrantly boosting the price of white carnations for the Mother's Day trade." "The red carnation has no connec- tion with Mother's Day. Yet florists have spread the idea that it should be worn lor a mother who hag passed away. This has boosted the sale of red carnations."-. That the real spirit of Mother's Day may survive the greed and commerc- ialization. Miss Jarvis suggests that it be observed in the true sense, as a day of deed and sentiment â€" a day to inspire deeper feeling toward the home and especially its motherhood, â€" Bruce Herald and Times.
