Thurston & Son, Proprietors PORTLAW This community was shocked to : learn of the death of Mrs. Boyce of Collingrwood. Deceased was a daugh- ter of the late Mr. Jeramiah and Mrs. Thompson, and a sister of Mrs. Albert Blackburn on the 4th line. She spent her girlhood in this community, and all sympathize with the bereaved hus- band, mother and sisters in their affliction. The sad news came on Sunday to Mrs. T. R. McKenzie of the sudden passing of her cousin, M»8. S. E. K. Walker of Toronto. The deceased lady with her husband and family visited here about a month ago, and to all appearances was enjoying health and life. Mrs. McKenzie is in the city with the sorrowing family. We are sorry to hear that the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Blackburn is at present very ill. We are glad to report the Blakey family all on a fair way to complete recovery. Mr. Thos. Fletcher, Toronto, spent a day in this vicinity last week. Mr. John Badgerow had a barn raising last week. Miss May Middleton and friend of Toronto visited with the former's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Shier. Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Aiken, Mrs. Home and Mr. T. Walker of Toronto were week end visitors with the for- mer's son, Mr. J. HT Walker, here. Mr. T. Yates of Berkeley visited with friends here lately. Master Murray Fishier spent a few holidays with his cousins, Everett and Delbert Fisher, on the 4th line. Miss Leila Clark is holidaying with relatives in Owen Sound. Mr. George Robertson and son of Toronto visibed the past week with his brother, Mr. John Robertson, and family. Halle^ and two sons, Herbie and Freddie, of Toronto motored up and spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Croft and family. Elmer and Audrey Warling of Flesherton holidaying the past week with their cousins, Harvey and Ever- ett Croft. Mr. Jim Wilkinson of Duncan vis- ited last week with his sister, Mrs. Ernie Russell. Orval Russell re- turned home with him for a few holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Marall Betts of To- ronto spent the week end with his father, Mr. Levi Betts. Mr. C. Newell and wife visited on Friday with relatives near Durham. Sister Thomas of Indiana preached at Salem on Sunday evening. Unity U.F.W.O. club will visit the Holdfast Club on Wednesday, Aug. 10th at the home of Miss May Stewart. During the severe electric storm on Thursday night Mr. John Robertson's large bam on the Kerton place was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. This means a big loss to Mr. Robertson, as the barn was a fine large one. Mr. and Mrs. Ab. Wilkinson and babe and Mrs. Ernie Russell visited thi3 former's parents at Duncan on Sundp.y. Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Gamey and daughter of Toronto holidayed with Dick Clark, wife and family. Mrs. Boyce and daughter, Mrs. A. English, attended the funeral of Mrs. Fred Boyce of CoUingwood last week. Hislop has returned home after a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Wilfred Magee, 8th line. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. David and daughter, Alma, Mr. and Mrs. Young and son, Jack, and Mr. Harold Tuohy of Buffalo and Mrs. Thos. Gamey of Sault Ste. Marie visited ori Thursday last with Mrs. Alex. Hoy. On a little branch on our Duchess apple tree there were five large white blossoms, which just bloomed over Sunday last, while on the same little twig there are two well developed apples. Mr. and Mi's. Roy McMillan and little daughter of Markdale visited with Mrs. Wilson. Miss Mary Weber is assisting In household duties at Mrs. Thornton's near Griersville. The funeral will take place on .Wednesday at 2 p.m. Some of our youths spent p.irt of Sunday at the beach (to be sure they should have been at Sunday School) and experienced the thrill of their young lives in an airplane ride. One of the party is reported to have had the courage to loop the loop in his first attempt in the air, and another was too timid to fly, she felt safer on terra firma. The Onward baseball team were over to Durham last Wednesday ev- ening and pla\"ed a five inning game with Rocky Saugieen. The same was good and at the end of the 4th the score was four runs even. On- ward batted first in the fifth and failed to .score and with the darkness were unable to field the hits from the Rookie's bats and the winning run was scored. A return game is expected in the near future. Huddy Brothers have put a steel roof on their barn. Miss Marion Muir. teacher at O.D. R. school for the past two years, will resume duties at the same school this year.
