- Fatal Affray in Norval.
Last Thursday evening a number of parties were at Lyon's Hotel, in Norval, and at about 11 o'clock they started to go home, when a couple of dogs commenced fighting. Thos. Hewson, a harness maker, in that village, who owned one of the dogs, tried to prevent them from being separated by Mr. Lyons, the hotel-keeper. In the scuffle that ensued Lyons pushed Hewson, causing him to fall, with his head striking the frozen ground, where he lay stunned. Hewson was taken to his house and put to bed, his stupid state being attributed more to the effects of his drinking than to the fall. The following morning he arose from his bed, and walked across the room, his family noticing that he was unable to speak, and that he appeared to be in a very critical condition. Medical aid was summoned, but he never recovered from his comatose state, and died on Friday night. He was a large heavy man, about 55 years of age, and had carried on the business of harness making a good while in that village. An inquest was held by Dr. Freeman of Georegetown, and a post mortem by Dr. McGarvin of Acton, when a verdict was rendered in accordance with the above facts. The examination showed that Hewson was in a healthy condition, and that there was nothing to cause death in the ordinary course of nature. The skull was found to be slightly fractured and a hone had penetrated the brain, causing death. We understand that Lyons is under arrest to answer the charge of manslaughter. - Featured Link
