OUR CARRIE.
Lines on the death of Mrs. Wm. N. Snyder, who
died 27th August, 1891.
She died? O, Father, can it be,
That we ne're more on earth shall see
Her slight fair form, her beauteous grace,
Her kindly look, her good sweet face?
Oh, Lord, thy knowest best. Shall we
Do ought but to thee bow the knee?
Shall we, the creatures of thy skill,
Presume to judge thy righteous will?
We cannot understand that will;
But shall in thy rich promise still
Put all our trust; for thou hast said,
That "all things worketh for our good."
But two short years have passed since we
Had met her, oh, so happily;
'Twas then we saw her - a fair bride -
Joy of our hearts, her husband's pride.
Since then we've learned to love her more,
So much, to part it grieves us sore,
A faithful friend, she e'er did prove,
That she was worthy of our love.
So pure in heart, so good, so kind,
We'd liken her to gold, refined,
Her thoughtful and unselfish ways,
Oft filled our hearts with happiness.
She was a sister, loving, true;
Some good work ever held in view,
A faithful and kind-hearted wife,
We'll ne'er forget her calm, sweet, life.
A loving husband she has left
Behind, in sorrow. He's bereft
Of one that to him was more dear
Than all his other friendships here.
A darling, little baby boy,
A few days old, - his father's joy -
Also remains; his mother's grace,
Reflected in his winsome face.
Saviour, divine, will thou dispel
From our sad hearts the gloom we feel;
Thee knowest best the pangs of death
But usher in eternal breath.
She is not dead! No. 'Tis but sleep
That cast the pallor o'er her cheek;
The sleep of death; the dawn of light
And life eternal, ever bright.
We cannot see her, but she lives;
Oh, what sweet comfort that thought gives
Help us, O Lord, that we may rise
To meet her there, above the skies.
