DEATH OF COL. GOODWILLIE.
His Funeral Last Thursday Very
Largely Attended.
After an illness of several months Lieut.-Col. George Stewart Goodwillie died at his residence, Georgetown, on Tuesday of last week. In his death Georgetown loses one of its best citizens and his family a kind and loving father.
Mr. Goodwillie was born on the 8th line, Esquesing, about one mile from Georgetown, on April 12th, 1842. His parents were George and Eliza (Forbes) Goodwillie. His father was a native of Vermont, and his mother of New York, but both were of Scotch descent. After completing his course in the public school Mr. Goodwillie was placed under the tutorship of the late Rev. Charles Dade, a distinguiished Church of England scholar of Cambridge. He entered Toronto University in 1861, and after carrying off scholarships in mathematics and general proficiency, graduated B.A. in 1865, and M.A. in 1866. He then entered the law office of Morphy, Sullivan & Fenton, of Toronto, where he remained three years. After completing this law course, he was for several years engaged as classical tutor and registrar of University College. In 1876 he began the practice of his profession in Georgetown, where he built up a large and remunerative practice. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, also of the A.F. & A.M. He was clerk and treasurer of Georgetown for many years. In December, after the Trent affair, Mr. Goodwillie took an active part in organizing the University Rifle Company, now "K" Company of the Toronto Q.O.R. He remained a member of the company until he left college, when he joined No. 3 Company of the 20th Regiment as ensign, remaining in the regiment until a few years ago when he retired with the rank of Lieut.-Col. Mr. Goodwillie was married in the year 1870 to Miss Annie Barber, daughter of the late Joseph Barber, of Georgetown. Mrs. Goodwillie died in August, 1889. A family of one son and three daughers remain. The heart-felt sympathy of the entire community is extended to them in their sad bereavement. - Herald.
