- Another Esteemed Citizen Gone.
About the first of October Mr. Thomas McMackon left town to visit his sons in Elgin and Kent counties. He spent a few weeks with his son Thomas at Sheddon, and on Thanksgiving went to Highgate to visit David. He was not feeling well, being troubled with his heart, but was around until Sunday, when life was very suddenly terminated by heart failure. Mr. McMackon and his family enjoyed the highest esteem of the people of Acton. They came here from Rockwood some thirty-two years ago. When the family grew up they dispersed to other points, and for a number of years Mr. and Mrs. McMackon lived at Highgate. They returned to their home here seven years ago. Mr. McMackon was born at Rathfryland, County Down, Ireland, in 1828. He came to America in 1848, was in Philadelphia for several years, and then came to Canada, settling at Markham. In 1852 he returned to Philadelphia and married Sarah McKnight, who survives him. The new family settled at Markham, and here five members of the family were born. William, the youngest, had his birthplace at Guelph. The family comprised three sons and three daughters: Mrs. J. W. Burns, Rockwood; Mrs. Joseph Fyfe, Acton, and the late Mrs. John Cameron; David at Highgate; Thomas at Sheddon; and William at Ridgetown. Mr. McMackon was a hardworking citizen of sterling character, a friend to all. He was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. The remains arrived in town on Tuesday evening and the funeral was held yestrday afternoon from Fyfe Villa, the residence of his daughter, and the remains were interred in Fairview Cemetery. - Media Type
