- DEATH OF MRS. W. L. WORDEN.
One of Acton's Bright Young Matrons
Suddenly Called to Her Reward.
After but three or four weeks of illness Mrs. W. L. Worden, Jr., succumbed last Friday morning at the house on Church Street, and her happy spirit left the tenement of clay. About the first of March she caught a severe cold, other complications set in and she gradually became worse. The last week she lay in a comatose condition most of the time, and gave no evidence of consciousness during the last day or so.
May Duignan, was the daughter of the late Thomas Duignan, and was born at Nenagh, in Grey County, in 1867. When fifteen or sixteen years of age she came to Acton and was for some time engaged at the Canada Glove Works. Twenty years ago next June she was united in holy wedlock with her sorrowing husband, Wm. L. Worden, and all the intervening years have been most happily spent together. Two children blessed their home. Leonard, who is now 16 and Gladys 11.
Mrs. Worden was a bright, trustful Christian woman and was one of the most active members of the Baptist Church. She was the child of Roman Catholic parents, but after coming to Acton she attended the Methodist Church with her young friends and during the ministry of the late Rev. Robert Phillips, she and her husband were converted and united with the Church. For several years they were regular attendants of the Sunday morning class and Mrs. Worden's bright testimony was always listened to with interest. Some time later Mr. Worden felt that he could be useful in the church of his fathers, where the numbers were smaller, and he and Mrs. Worden therefore united with the Baptist Church. Here Mrs. Worden made herself a most useful member. When the new church was built she was noticeably energetic in securing carpets and other furnishing to make the new place of worship as attractive as possible. At the time of her death she was Superintendent of the Home Department of the Sunday School and Secretary-Treasurer of the Women's Missionary Society.
The funeral on Sunday afternoon was very largely attended. At three o'clock the remains were conveyed to the Baptist Church where Rev. H. C. Priest B.A., the pastor preached a most impressive sermon and spoke reverently and feelingly of the life and character of the deceased. Revs. J. C. Wilson B.A. and D. Dick assisted in the service. The floral tributes were numerous, among them being an anchor from the Baptist Church and a beautiful wreath from the Fire Brigade.
The following friends from a distance attended: Mrs. W. J. O'Reily, Ayton; Miss Mary O'Reily, Toronto; Mr. T. Duignan, Guelph; Mr. Bernard O'Reily, Hamilton; Mrs. P. J. Smith and Miss Queenie Smith, Montreal; Mrs. H. Wiswell, Messrs. D. Wordell, W. J. Ryder, James Ryder, and Mr. and Mrs. H. Coon, Guelph; Mr. and Mrs. L. Kennedy and Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Worden, Georgetown; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mann, Milton; Mrs. H. Campbell, Mrs. T. Ramshaw and Mr. L. Ramshaw, Toronto Junction. - Media Type
