Martin McMurchy, a Bright Young
Graduate of Acton High School,
Dies of Typhoid.
The death on Easter Sunday afternoon of Martin McMurchy, son of D. McMurchy, Esq., at his father's home, lot 3, third line, Erin, brought deep sorrow to the home and sadness to many hearts. This bright young man was teaching school at Craigmount. He was taken ill on Monday, 2nd inst., and feeling badly used up he decided next day, to come home. He missed connections at Belleville and did not arrive at Acton until Monday evening. He walked the three miles home from Acton. When the family physician examined him he found he was suffering from pneumonia. This was checked in a few days when typhoid set in and the weakened system was unable to resist the second attack.
. Martin McMurchy was a fine specimen of Christian young manhood. He was born on the homestead, where he died, on the 10th March, 1885, and celebrated the attainment of his majority last month. With his twin brother, John, he passed the entrance in 1903, under the tuition of Miss Minnie Bennett. In 1904 and 1905 the brothers attended the High School department at Acton for parts of each term, their duties, on the farm requiring their services there during the busy months. They succeeded well in their studies and last year passed the examdination for second class teachers' certificates. They then attended the county model school at Milton and both graduated with good standing. John was engaged teacher of the school at Trafalgar, and Martin at Peelee Island. The latter went at the beginning of the year to commence his duties, but owing to the ice between the island and mainland the ferry was not running and he returned home. The position at Craigmount, in Hastings County, then opened and he resigned the former and accepted this, commencing his duties about the 28th of January.
He had been a member of the Congregational Church, Churchill, for some four years, and was a young man of splendid parts, a general favorite.
Miss Lily McMurchy, a sister, is also a teacher and has the Waterloo school in Esquesing.
The funeral on Tuesday afternoon was largely attended. Rev.R. J. Drysdale, his pastor, preached an impressive sermon in the Church at the Hill, and was assisted hy Rev. J. Milne, of Ballinafad. The remains were born to their last resting place in Fairview Cemetery by Principal Stewart, and Harold Nicklin, Bert Mullin, Will Mullin, James Henderson and Ralston Brown, all fellow-graduates of our High School. - Media Type
