- A GOOD MAN PASSED AWAY.
Death of Mr. Thomas Easton, after a
Long and Painful Illness.
For more than thirty years Thomas Easton has been an esteemed resident of Acton and was almost daily to be seen on our streets until a year ago, when he was taken seriously ill with heart trouble and other ailments. Frequently during the past six months it was thought his end was near, but he rallied, and the vital spark remained until last Saturday afternoon when the spirit took its flight and the pain-racked frame was laid at rest. In his long illness his devoted partner was ever at his bedside to minister to him.
Thomas Easton was the son of the late Thomas Easton, who came from England and settled in Nassagaweya when it was bush. He was born there on June 23rd, 1835. On September 20th, he was married to Hannah Dent, with whom he lived in happy wedded life for over fifty years. Their golden wedding was celebrated at the home of their son in Chicago in 1901.
Two sons and two daughters blessed the home, of whom Mrs. Edw. Darby, Nassagaweya, John and Alfred in Chicago, survive. Maria died fourteen years ago. He was the last member of his father's family of six sons and daughters.
Mr. Easton retired from farming thirty-one years ago and came to Acton.
Deceased was a man of sterling character. He became a Christian in his boyhood and steadfastly endeavored to live an upright and consistent life. He was a member of the Methodist Church and dearly he loved the church of his choice and its service, and was never absent when able to attend. Nearly twenty years ago, he was appointed a class leader in the church here, and no official was more faithful in his attendance upon this means of grace. He was a member of the Official Board at the time of his death.
In politics Mr. Easton was a life-long Conservative and had great faith in his party. He was a strong temperance man.
The funeral on Tuesday afternoon was very largely attended. The service was conducted by Rev. G. W. Barker, assisted by Rev. Matthew Wilson, M.A. The following friends of the deceased bore the remains to the tomb: William Brown, J. C. Nelson, Geo. Dills, John Williams, Jno. Harvey and J. H. Reed.
Friends from a distance attended the funeral as follows: John and Alfred Easton, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Abrahm Easton, Jr., and John Easton, Appleby; Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Alton, Nelson; Mr. Geo. Bumby, Bronte; Mrs. Wm. Trann, and Mrs. B. Cookwell, Locust Hill; Miss Edith Dent, Weston; Mr. Wallace Dent, Brampton; and Mr. Joseph Dent, Forest; Messrs. Chas. and James Laing, Corwhin; Mr. and Mrs. John Kitching, Nassagaweya.
The floral offerings included a pillow from the family; sprays from Wallace Dent, Brampton; John and Abraham Easton, Appleby; The Misses Hadgson, Guelph, and from the deceased's class in the Methodist Church. - Featured Link
