- THE HAND OF DEATH.
John T. Brown and Joseph Coleman,
Aged and Esteemed Citizens,
Quietly Pass Away.
OTHER DEATHS THIS WEEK.
For several months Mr. John T. Brown has been engaged in the erection of a fine brick residence, on the site of the property on Mill Street which he owned for upwards of forty years. He looked forward with pleasurable anticipations to spending his declining years in this new home with his son Mr. G. H. Brown and family. About a fortnight ago he took cold and an acute attack of asthma followed, and on Saturday afternoon he passed away. John T. Brown was born at Niagara in 1834. When a young man he came to Esquesing with his father who settled on the farm at the Brick Church, above Acton, now owned by Mr. Edward Cleave. In 1862 he married Mary Gibbons, daughter of the late John Gibbons, of the third line. Mrs. Brown predeceased him six years ago. Mr. G. H. Brown is the only child living, two daughters having died in childhood. During the hustling lumbering days of Acton's history deceased was a foreman in the yards here of the late Charles Symon. Subsequently he held similar positions in Sarnia and Toronto. Some seventeen years ago he purchased the well known Hill Farm, in Eramosa, the birthplace of James J. Hill, the great railway magnate. Two years ago last summer he returned to Acton. Mr. Brown was a man of splendid business ability and more than ordinary intelligence. He was Assessor and Collector for this municipality last year and performed his duties so satisfactorily that the Council gave him an honorarium in addition to his salary upon completion of his duties. He was an adherent of the Methodist Church, and though not a very regular attendent was a close student of the Bible, and his favorite hymn was "Rock of Ages." He was a Liberal in politics. The funeral was held on Thanksgiving Day, Rev. G. W. Barker officiating.
