CONRAD HILDENBRAND
One who has been a familiar figure in Acton for nearly forty years, was laid to rest last Thursday. Conrad Hildenbrand was born at Hesse Dormstadt, Germany, in 1850. When a young man in his eighteenth year he left the old home and his parents and came to Canada. He settled in Kitchener whence two sisters, older members of the family, had preceded him several years. Later he was made section boss of the G.T.R. at Petersburg. Here on the 7th March, 1872, he was joined in holy wedlock with Hannah Knipfel, daughter of the late Adam Knipfel, of Petersburg. Thirty-eight years ago Mr. Hildenbrand was given charge of Acton section of the G.T.R. which he held for over a quarter of a century. His health was poor and has never since been very rugged. Last year he had a serious attack at midsummer. About two weeks ago he was stricken with paralysis and he graduallyu sank until on Tuesday morning, 25th February his spirit passed out. Nearly all the members of his family were at his bedside when the end came. His devoted wife and five sons and five daughters survive, as follows: Mrs. James Graybill, Waterloo; Henry, at Granton, George at Johnstown, N.Y.; Mrs. John Reits, Kitchener; Charles, at Lindsay; Mrs. Albert Tracy, Waterloo; Fred, at Russell, Iowa; Mrs. Cecil Brown, Toronto; Mable and Adam at home. Mr. Hildenbrand was a member of the Lutheran Church at Petersburg. In Acton he attended St. Alban's Church, but his membership remained at the old home church, and to the cemetery adjoining his body was conveyed for burial. He was an industrious, hard-working citizen and he and his family have enjoyed the respect of this community. - Featured Link
