Frances Niblock photo Man charged after leaving crash scene A 48-year-old Halton Hills man who left the scene of two accidents at Main and Mill Streets on Tuesday, December 27 was arrested and charged after a witness followed him from the scene and called police. Police said the driver was westbound on Mill Street at 6:55 p.m. in a Chevrolet Ce- lebrity when he failed to stop for a line of cars stopped at the red light and ran into the rear of a vehicle. The driver that caused the accident then ran the red light and his car was struck in the intersection by a northbound vehicle. A witnesses followed the driver of the offending ve- hicle to the Royal Canadian Legion on Wright Avenue and called police who arrested the driver and charged him with having over 80-milligrams of alcohol in 80-millilitres of blood, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and fail to remain. Police said no major in- juries were reported in the accidents and there are no damage estimates. Pole fire A hydro pole caught fire east of Acton, bringing elec- trical wires down at the Sixth Line just after 8:30 on Mon- day night. Acton firefighters were on scene until hydro crews arrived. False alarm A power failure triggered an alarm activation at 8:54 a.m. last Thursday morning on the First Line, Nassagaweya, south of Highway 7. Arriving at the scene, Acton firefighters were told the pow- er had gone out, tripping the alarm and starting the generator. No reason for alarm Acton firefighters could not determine what triggered the alarm at 12:11 p.m. last Thursday at the Silver Creek Conservation building on the Ninth Line, south of High- way 7. Acton firefighters searched the building before reset- ting the system and advising that the alarm company be called. Wood stove fire A 27 Side Road homeowner arrived at his property west of Trafalgar Road just before 10 on Monday morning to find Acton firefighters had taken apart his wood stove/fireplace and part of the piping to get to a fire that had filled the house with smoke and triggered a smoke alarm at 9:43 a.m. Arriving on the scene, Acton firefighters could see smoke coming from the woodstove in the unoccupied house. They emptied the stove and disassembled the piping to get rid of soot and extinguish the fire. Not worried about towers The Town is not wor- r i ed t h a t i t c an on l y strongly discourage locat- ing telecommunication towers near environmentally signifi- cant areas because its words carry significant weight according to Planning Director Bruce MacLean. Although Industry Canada has final approval and licens- ing decisions for the antenna towers, the new protocol will be used to judge applications for the construction and loca- tion of new telecommunication towers in Halton Hills that are allowed in all areas of Halton Hills, with some guidelines in- cluding a minimum 150-metre buffer zone between towers and residential, recreational and institutional uses. In an attempt to get com- panies to co-locate new equipment on existing tow- ers, that type of application is viewed as minor and is less involved than a major application. Voters... (January 3) a sixth candidate had entered the race in Wel- lington-Halton Hills. Carol Ann Krusky of Rockwood is representing the Christian Heritage Party, Canadas only pro-life, pro- family federal political party. The health and safety con- sultant, who has volunteered with BirthRight, and raised money for Guelphs Women in Crisis, is making her first run for public office. I believe in the policies of the Christian Heritage Party and I believe there is a need for change and I believe the party offers Canadians a way to vote to promote good Ca- nadian values, Krusky said on Monday, adding the party believes in stiffer penalties for criminals, more money for preventive health care and a stronger focus on youth and families.
