NOW ENROLLING FOR FALL START THE NEW YEAR OFF WITH GOOD GRADES Snow plow operators concerned Wellington plow and snow clearing drivers have approached Wellington O.P.P. with concerns for childrens safety during the winter months of snow removal. The scenario: A huge diesel powered plow lung- ing forward as the blade rolls back tons of snow and debris from the road- way. Suddenly, the operator spots a kid peeking his head out of a bank, just a few yards ahead. This time he has time to stop. The kids had made a snow tunnel in the bank and were playing in it while they waited for the school bus to come. (True story, and a very close call.) Children love to build forts and tunnels in the snow, and need lots of the white stuff to do this. The banks and hills of snow along the roadway attract children as a play area, but they can also pose a dangerous threat to a child. Passing snowplows and the debris and ice they push can spell disaster for a child, often unseen by the plow operator. The plow or wing can strike the child indi- rectly or directly. Other cases: a child tunneling into the snow bank may be bur ied . THE BEST GAME YOU CAN NAME: These people enjoyed a brief taste of winter and Canadas favourite past time at Lloyd Dyer Park on Sunday. During November and December members of the Halton Hills community generously donated many items to our Christmas Needs Program, including toys, clothing, knitting, gift cards and money. Thanks so much to everyone who made a donation. There was a significant increase in the number of applicants this year and com- munity members, including churches, businesses, groups and individual families re- sponded to that need by sponsoring specific families. Sponsors were given a pro- file of the family (ages and sizes of the children) and then they purchased items of clothing specifically for that family. Thank you so very much to all the hampers sponsors we are very grate- ful for your support of this program. We also appreciate the coverage outlining our need for sponsors that The New Tanner and George- town Independent/Acton Free Press provided. The holiday season can be a stressful time for anyone who is in a difficult financial situation so we are pleased to be able to offer this pro- gram to the community and it is wonderful that we re- ceive such generous support from the people of Halton Hills. We are fortunate to live in a community where people care for one another and demonstrate that caring attitude by sharing their resources with others. Sincerely, Cathy Gerrow, Community Support Coordinator. Replace immigration people To the editor, Re: Whats your solution? We would like to see the whole immigration depart- ment replaced and people hired that knows what they are doing, the ones there now are doing a very poor job! At the first criminal act, deport the guilty party, if they are not citizens. If they are, send them up to a boot camp way up north, where they would have to work for their food. Anyone who is caught with a gun should get a jail sentence of no less than 10 years. No bail, no parole the full sen- tence must be served. (Of course with the jails we have today, they might l ike i t bet ter in there than on the outside). For murder they should have 20-25 years or life again with no bai l or parole. Some may say it is way too much, then tell it to the people that are losing their loved ones. Police should be able to get a search warrant if there is the slightest idea that guns are being kept in certain places, they are then able to see for themselves and catch the criminals. How much is i t costing the government (us) the way it is done now? Maybe it is t ime we should be able to vote the judges in instead of them being appointed. May- be they would then do a better job than are being done now. Rockwood residents, names withheld by request.
