I always say I went away for two years in 1942 and didnt come back until 1971 until I retired, Norton said, adding without the support of his wife, he could not have lived a life in far-flung exotic places that included Columbia, Peru, Iran, Libya and Norway. Norton said he embraced the South American ways I ran around with a dictionary and refused to hire anyone who spoke English because I wanted to speak the language of the land, he said, adding his son David spoke Spanish before he spoke English. The Nortons had two chil- dren, David, who now lives in Brampton, and Nancy (Dyc) who lives in Acton, and seven grandchildren. Norton said coming back to Acton to retire wasnt a culture shock because they came home every two years on vacation, and stayed in touch with family the entire time they were away. We really enjoyed our time away. We were in those countries when it was all good times we didnt have revolutions and murders, although there was a war in Iran that shut the borders at one point, but our family was evacuated by the company. We made life-long friends, Norton said, adding both he and his wife, who died in February, wrote journals about their globetrotting a lasting legacy of an adventur- ous life.
