Bearcats excel in Welland Acton HS Senior Girls Volleyball team travelled to Welland on Saturday for the Niagara College Invitational volleyball tournament. Competing in a 30 team tour- ney the Bearcats finished their pool play in first position against Confederation Ecole Secondaire (Welland), St. Marys (Hamil- ton), Rockland and Woodstock. Continuing on to the quarter-finals the hard hitting and defensively quick Acton crew easily defeated Jean Vanier to put them in the semi-finals. Here they were up against a tall and strong Forest Heights team from Waterloo. Starting out a little shaky with some missed serves the Bearcats drew on the strong offensive skills and consistent digging game to surpass their opponents 25-22 in the first game. With Melissa Bigg mixing up the plays and Jen Wieck, Ashley Nixon and Kirsten Lowe shutting down a number of hits from Forest Heights with strong blocks, Acton edged by them 25-23 in the second game to give them the match. The final match saw Birchmount Col- legiate, an AAAA school and Acton AA go head-to-head. Again the Bearcats demonstrated strength at blocking, sear- ing serves by Missy Rowley and Ashley Nixon and a number of big hits by Katy Boychuk and Alison Minto but the quick game of their opponents proved to be too much for them. They lost 23-25, 23-25 in a hard fought battle for the gold medal. This put Actons record at four golds and one silver in tournament play this season. Jen Wieck and Kirsten Lowe were chosen for the All-Star team for their exceptional play. It was an all out effort by all members of the team as they ready themselves for play-off action in the Halton league. BANTAMS BOW TO BLADES: Dylan Creasey, Tanners BB Bantam Forward, is stopped by Lincoln goalie in Blades 4-1 OMHA playoff win at Acton. Creasey set up Scott Hofland for Actons lone goal. Bantams played some of their best hockey of season but were eliminated. The tournament, which featured the best ama- teur boxers from all over Ontario and Quebec, did not disappoint the crowds with exciting bouts, unex- pected upsets and, not for the squeamish, plenty of blood, sweat and tears as adrenaline and emotions ran high. Over the three day tour- nament, with well over 60 bouts on the card, boxers competed for the coveted gold cup in all manner of boxing styles, displaying fresh new talent. Cameron McIsaac was no exception, winning his first bout of the weekend against Justin Leis of the Waterloo Boxing Club with a score of 37-27 and his second bout against Kevin Umana of the Champion Boxing Club with a final count of 22-17, taking Cameron to gold. Cameron was one of 10 boxers from the Big Tyme Boxing Club out of Oran- geville who competed at the tournament. Camerons gold and those of his team mates helped ensure the club walked away from the tourney with the Best Team award for the second time. With the Brampton Cup under their belts, the Cadet division of the Big Tyme Boxing Team is in training for the Cadet Provincial Championship in Missis- sauga on March 4 and 5.
