THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2006 THE NEW TANNER 19 Acton man killed by VIA Rail train One important piece of information I omitted re the Income Tax clinic being held at the Acton Seniors Centre. As well as being a senior over 65, or a member of the Centre your annual income for a single person must be below $25,000 or $30,000 for a couple. Eileen Dix has once again arranged for volunteers trained by Revenue Canada to be at the Acton Seniors Centre on Tuesday, March 28, and Tuesday, April 11. There is no charge for this service. If you are inter- ested you must call Eileen 519-853-0493 for an ap- pointment. Thank you to all the members who picked up their new newsletter during the week, and also deliv- ered neighbours. Its one way you get to know what is going on at the Centre every week. Dont forget the Annual General Meeting on Tues- day, February 28 at 1p.m. It was standing room only at the Centre on Tuesday, January 30 for the Fraud in Action and Identity Theft presentation by Detective Constable Lauren Sclisizzi and Detective Constable Ken Best who work for the Halton Regional Police with #1 District Fraud Unit, and Senior Resource Of- ficer Jackie Brennon who is the Elder Services Co-coor- dinator. There are certainly some innovative ways of getting information about people, whether it is going through your garbage, or mail, (especially at tax time when all the information anyone might need to steal your identity would be right there). The officers stressed that one shouldnt carry ad- ditional information with you such as birth certificate, social insurance card, or additional credit cards not being used. They said only the government has any right to ask for your social insurance number, and not to give out personal infor- mation of any kind on the phone. If it is something you think you might be in- terested in ask them to mail the information. If they are legitimate they will do so. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is a scam. Genuine ones will give you time to check them out. All personal papers should be kept in a locked safety box at home as most burglars know where all the best hiding places are, even it you feel they would never think of looking there, the officers stressed. Officers also emphasized you should always check credit card statements very carefully and never throw out anything without shred- ding or tearing first. Make sure there are no purchases on your statements that you didnt authorize. If there are, make sure you inform your bank or police right away. When paying for something make sure you watch the card being swiped and returned to you, so they cant swipe it again to get the information for their own use. When you receive unsolicited credit cards, and cheques in the mail, make sure you shred or cut those, too. It is very easy for a thief to use them, as they contain all the per- sonal information they need on the magnetic strip. During the question and answer period there were a few horror stories, but mostly things sounded positive. Did you know there is a Phone Busters number? In 2002 they got 7,629 calls. The Thursday afternoon Bid Euchre had two mooners this week, Don Yellowlees and Mae Milton. I see there is a mis- print in the new newsletter. I am sure all Rama people know that the trip in Febru- ary is on the Wednesday as usual. It is only the March trip that has changed to Thursday. I understand carpet bowl- ing had a great turnout with 10 people playing. They welcomed two new mem- bers who have just joined the Centre, Phyllis and Percy. Shirley Kruks Black team beat Nives Bozics Brown team 10-7. Marj Lane te l ls me Kentner Catering from Georgetown will be at the Centre on February 14 at 1:30. They will talk about the ins and outs of the catering business, plus dec- orating tips. I understand they will provide samples of tasty treats, so something to look forward to. The hike was cancelled last Friday. Heinz checked the trail out on the Thurs- day and said it was very muddy and slippery, plus it was raining. I think that is one of the few times it has been cancelled due to the weather. There is a Valentine Mys- tery Lunch planned for February 17. You must purchase your ticket before February 15 so they know how much food to prepare. They are always excellent! The 50/50 wasnt won again this week. Reg Marsh & Associates 22 Main St. S. Berry, of Storey Drive, was walking on train tracks just east of Guelph when he was struck and killed by an eastbound Via Rail passen- ger train last Monday night at 10 p.m. His father, Dave Berry, said his son regularly went for long walks, and had set out for Guelph at 6 p.m. on Monday. His family learned of his death two days later. Berry is survived by his parents and a younger brother.
