THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 2006 THE NEW TANNER 17 HHCSIs Friendly Visiting Program Friendship is a wonderful part of our lives. We talk and laugh with our friends and feel their support when we go through tough times. But imagine what life would be like if we were all alone, unable to get out, and most of our friends were no longer around. Many elderly people feel this type of loneliness and isolation. The Friendly Visiting program of Halton Hills Community Support and Informa- tion is trying to ease the loneliness by matching a visiting Volunteer with someone who needs them. We have some wonderful success stories says Terri Forbes, the Seniors Coordinator at the Acton HHCSI of- fice. One of the seniors describes her Friendly Visitor as the light of her life. According to Terri, becoming a Friendly Visitor is not really a large time commitment. It only takes about an hour or two each week to visit with someone in their own home. Chatting, having tea together, looking at photos, or playing cards are some of the activities that seniors and their visitors enjoy. But right now there is a critical need for Friendly Visitors. Terri describes the waiting list as longer than it has ever been in the past and she believes that this need is due to the fact that many people are remaining in their homes as long as possible to maintain their independence and the personal joys they have in life. If you would like to be a Friendly Visitor and experi- ence the special bonds of friendship with someone who would appreciate your visits, please call Terri Forbes at 519-853-3310. St. Joseph Lakers advance to Halton Championships On a blistery day in Janu- ary the quest began. A small school on the shores of Fairy Lake in Acton had tryouts for the St. Joseph Catholic School boys basketball team, the Lakers. A humble beginning to what has turned out to be history in the mak- ing. With guidance from Coach Stephen Kay and assistant coach Robert Mailloux the team started with conviction. Solid play from returning team members Adam Am- ato, Brandon Masini, Evan McMeekin and Mathew Kutasienski, new arrival Mathew Allain, and first year players Cameron Coady, Tyler Colby, Phillip Conlin, Claudio Gratziano, Nick Victoria, Dennis Perkovic, and Stepan Ivanicic led to aspiring optimism. When the regular season came to a close, the hard working group of talented players, who put in five day a week practices, proved they had the right stuff, finishing off in style with a convinc- ing win over the Guardian Angels from Milton and an undefeated regular season. After a first round bye and two wins the quest contin- ued with a trip to the North Halton Championship game in Milton on April 2. A loss in the championship game to St. Brigid of Georgetown taught a very valuable les- son, and emphasized that nothing comes without hard work. The loss still put them into the Halton Sweet 16, but relegated the team to a lower seed. The team entered the tournament in Burlington on April 6 with confidence, however a loss to a lower seeded team in the first game made things look bleak. Fortune shone upon the young lads from Acton in game two however even though they had to play one of Burlingtons top seeds. A one point nerve wracking victory moved them on to the finals and a chance to go to the Halton Elementary Catholic School Final 4. As it turned out, their old nemesis St. Brigid of Georgetown, also ad- vanced and set the scene for a rematch for all the marbles. This also showed how strong the North Halton division, made up of Georgetown, Milton and Acton truly was. In a nerve wracking, end to end explosive game, the outcome would have to wait until the last tick of Catholic elementary school system moves on to the Halton Championship fi- nals April 18 in Oakville. Amazing! Congratulations to the players and coaching staff on a championship season. the clock when the boys from a small town knew it was their year. With a two point win, a wild scene of pandemonium struck. For the first time in Acton history the smallest of the 36 schools in the Halton Capital Plan review The Halton District School Board will hold a second series of public meetings to review the proposed Capital Plan, a long-term strategy ad- dressing the accommodation needs of students in elemen- tary and secondary schools in Halton. The Board held initial pub- lic meetings in February in each municipality to seek public input and comments on the proposed Plan. Since those meetings, the public has had the opportunity to submit written comments (until March 9, 2006). The second public meetings in Halton Hills are scheduled for Thursday, April 20 from 7-9p.m. at Georgetown High School. The Milton date is Tuesday, April 18 at the Haw- thorne Village Public School gym, 850 Bennett Blvd. ??? ?? ????????????? ?? ??????????????????? ?> ????????????????? ? ? ???????????????????? ?????? ??????? ?????? ??????????????? ???????? ??????? ??? ?????? ????? ?????? ???? ???????? ???????? ?? ?????????????? ???????????????????? ? ??????? ?????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????? ????????????? ???????????? ????????????? ???????????????????????????????????? ????????????? ?????????????????? ???????????? ? ???????????????? ??????????? ?????????????? ???????? ??????????? ???????? ???????? ????? ? ????? ??????? ?????? ???????????????? ?????????????? ???????????????? ???? ???? ???? ??? ??? ?? ????????????? ?? ??????????????????? ?> ??? ??????????? ???????????????????? ?????????????????????????????? ? ?????????????????? ???????????????????????? ??????? ? ????????????????????????????? ???????? ? ???????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????? ? ?
