Friday, April 21st, 2006 at 2 p.m. By Julie Conroy Maureen Smi th i s a longtime member of the To- ronto section of the Bruce Trail Association, and lives in Georgetown. She gave an excellent slide show and informative talk on the Bruce Trail at the Acton Seniors Centre recently. Smith gave some background of the Trail. When four members of the Hamilton Naturalist Club had a meeting in September1960, Ray Lowes asked Robert Bateman What would you think of a trail winding along the escarpment from one end to the other? This thought initiated the whole project. There were four members at the first Bruce Trail As- sociation committee meeting. Ray Lowes, Robert Bateman, Norman Pearson, and Dr Rob- ert MacLaren. Rays dream became true due to his hard work, and the dedication of many including Phil Gosling who took a year off work to persuade land owners to allow the club to build and maintain a trail the 850 km. length of the Escarpment (there are also 300km. of side trails). It was due to the kindness of the farmers, quarries, golf courses, conservation areas and other land owners that this wonderful trail exists. Over the years the route has changed slightly due to ei- ther new land owners, or the Bruce Trail Association being able to purchase some of the land. The Trail is divided into nine areas and nine clubs are responsible for its mainte- nance. The Trail is well marked with white blazes painted on trees, rocks and posts. Where there is a scenic view point or a secondary trail it is marked in blue. The Trail association has over 8,000 members at pres- ent. You do not have to be a member to use the trail, but they do ask you to respect peoples property and stick to the trail. Maureen and Heinz often conduct hikes which they advertise, and newcomers are welcome to join the group. They usually meet at Zellers car park in Georgetown and car pool to the designated spot. Acton Seniors Centre takes advantage of the Bruce Trail, and many of the Friday hikes have been along different parts of it. Easter Colouring Contest Saturday, April 15, 2006 COME JOIN IN THE FUN! Colouring contest from 2-3p.m. - Followed by an Easter Hunt! Ages: 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 Crayons will be provided, however you may bring your own tools. $50 in Mill St. Crossing money will be awarded to the top contestant in each category. HOP ON DOWN Saturday afternoon! TRAIL TALK: Heinz Rusche points out one of the scenic areas he has enjoyed walking through to Bryan Alder at the Bruce Trail information evening at the Acton Seniors Centre on Wednesday, April 5. There was a sizeable crowd there to enjoy the slides and find out more about the Trail. Several people had recently moved to Acton, and were very interested in the Bruce Trail Association. Heinz is a dedicated member and volunteer of the Association, and has one area he is responsible for maintaining. Heinz leads the Acton Seniors Centre hiking club members on their Friday hikes. He usually checks out the trail the day before to make sure there are no problems. Julie Conroy photo Senior enjoy slide tour of Bruce Trail
