Continued from page 1 It is a coincidence that the celebration of Easter takes place each year in early spring, commemorating the resur- rection of Jesus Christ. The early Christians knew Eas- ter as Paschal time. The Greek word Pascha was derived form the Hebrew word Pesach meaning pass- over. Passover is an annual Jewish holiday celebrating the escape of the Hebrew people from Egypt, where they had been slaves. Christians adopted the feast from the Jewish religion because the Paschal feast was prophetic of Christianity; the Paschal lamb slain by the Jews was regarded as symbolic of Christ since he died on the Jewish Paschal day, or Easter as we know it today. Coincidence or not, Easter has also been a celebration of rebirth. What better time to celebrate the resurrection of Christ than when the earth is springing back to life. The apparent lifelessness of winter is only an illusion. Sleeping just beneath the sur- face is life and more life. In the same way, Easter reminds us that death is an illusion and there is more than there appears. As Christians feel the sor- row of Good Friday and the joy of Easter, the Jewish people celebrate the feast of Passover today (Thursday). The events may have hap- pened 2000 years ago but they are as alive today as they were then and observed all over the world.
