Acton McDonalds owner earns top award By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner From fry boy to award- winning franchisee Dave Beatty says luck played a small role in his success in the McDonalds world, but his philosophy of always giving a little back has ob- viously served him well. Beatty, with wife Lucy, owns eight McDonalds franchises, including the Acton location, and was recently honoured with the Golden Arch Award an award given to fewer than one per cent of 4,500 McDonalds franchisees worldwide to signify their relentless focus on cus- tomer service, community involvement and excep- tional achievement. Beatty will receive the Gold Arch Award at a convention next month in Florida, one of 32 owner/ operators worldwide the only one from Canada to receive the top honour. Weve worked very hard at it and were very proud of all of all our peo- ple and how hard they work at things, Beatty said last Thursday, adding they have 600 employees who play a huge role in Beatty Food Ltd.s success. I find that in life or any- thing else what we give comes back ten-fold, he said, adding they live by the philosophy that our business is going well, and we should be giving back, and I think we should all live by that code, a little. Beatty began his career with McDonalds as a fry boy in 1969 at one of the first restaurants in the To- ronto area. The furthest thing from my mind was a career in McDonalds. I was there to make some money just like the teenagers today, but opportunities presented themselves and I went into management. The compa- ny grew very successfully and I grew with it, he said, adding its a career that he is very proud of. Beatty worked his way up through the ranks until 1992, when he was director of field services lias- ing with owner/operators when he decided to be- come a franchise owner in 1992. I loved the business, but I had an entrepreneurial longing and it turned out to be a perfect mix. I had ex- perience out in the field and an opportunity presented itself to be an owner and I jumped. Beatty currently chairs the McDonalds national business board, which rep- resents the owners across Canada, top executives determining how to run the company better. Although Beatty is very proud of all of his restau- rants, including the west Brampton location that opened three months ago, the Acton location is in the spotlight because last week it won an Outstand- ing Restaurant of the Year Award for 2005. said, adding they initially questioned if Acton was large enough to support a McDonalds. We usually dont go into that small a population, but its been very successful for us, and my staff there of 70 I couldnt be more proud of them, and its been a wonderful com- munity to be involved in, Beatty said. Each year, approximate- ly 40 of the best 1,400 McDonalds in Ontario are singled out for the award that recognizes outstand- ing quality and cleanliness thats delivered to the cus- tomer. Its a very prestigious award, so to our manage- ment people there and our staff, theyve done a wonderful job, Beatty Dave Beatty
