The Active Halton Hills program developed by the Town of Halton Hills Recreation & Parks Department was acknowledged for the important role it plays in prevention. Theme for this years event was The Chain of Survival. The Chain was developed by the Heart and Stroke Founda- tion of Canada and its seven links provide the foundation for achieving cardiovascular health in our communities. The first link in the chain is healthy choices. By promoting healthy living through its community walking and activity program, Active Halton Hills is part of this first link. Funded by the Government of Ontarios Active 2010 initiative the Active Halton Hills program uses fun motiva- tional and activity resources that challenge the community to get active. Participants are encouraged to track their activity throughout the challenges and log their hours on- line, comparing their progress to their fellow residents. The Spring Challenge runs from May 1, 2006 to June 24, 2006, and you can join in at any time. CDA honours Halton dental program The Canadian Dental Association honoured the Halton Oral Health Out- reach committee and the Burlington Dental Acad- emy with their prestigious award for Oral Health Promotion. The award is presented to individuals or organizations which have improved the oral health of Canadians through promot- ing oral health. Created in 1998, the Halton Oral Health Out- reach Program (HOHO) is a multi-partner project developed to co-ordinate dental services for the frail elderly and adults with special needs in Halton. To date, this unique program has provided service to over 2,000 people. The HOHO program provides a single point of access for oral health care information and assistance in receiving coordinated services. Halton Region Health Department pro- vides oral health education resources for individuals and their caregivers. For those who are eligible, Halton Region also of- fers funding for dental treatment services. The Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) of Halton provides information re- garding available oral health services and facili- tates referrals to accessible dental treatment services in Halton. In May 2004, the HOHO program was cited as a public health model to improve access to den- tal care at a University of Toronto conference on Access and Care: towards a National Oral Health Strategy, a conference supported by Health Cana- da, the Ontario Association of Public Health Dentistry, the Canadian Dental Hy- gienist Association, and the Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry. Haltons School Tour program recognized at Pinnacle awards Halton Regions school tour program won an award of merit at the Pin- nacle awards, hosted by the Hamilton Chapter of the Canadian Public Re- lations Society, on March 30. The program, which fits with the grade five curric- ulum on government, was recognized in the external communications category for increasing the aware- ness of the organization through the community. The school tour program provides students with the opportunity to learn about the role of regional council; Haltons role in emergency preparedness; a tour of police head- quarters by a uniformed officer, including the jail cells, the shooting range and the communications centre; a tour of Halton Reg ion s emergency medical services to learn firsthand about the role of paramedics; a trip to the mid-Halton sewage treatment facility and a guided bus tour through the Halton Waste Man- agement Site, to learn about waste disposal and recycling. Haltons award win- ning school tour program engages our children through an enjoyable field trip and gives us the op- portunity to put a human face to the services of the Region, said Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline. This enables the children to take home the messages they learn and share them with their parents. The school tour program has received extremely positive responses from teachers, parent chap- erones and s tudents . Working closely with the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board, the popularity of the program has seen demand grow each year with approximately 50 requests in 2004 to more than 150 requests for tours in 2005. The program has fur- ther cemented the great working relationship that exists between Halton Region and both school boards, said Chief Ad- ministrative Officer, Brent Marshall. We are current- ly in discussions with the school boards to augment the program to better suit their needs. The School Tour Pro- gram was established to raise awareness of Halton Regions programs, ser- vices and facilities; to persona l ize reg iona l government for school- aged children; to assist teachers in incorporating regional government ac- tivities into the grade five curriculum on municipal government; and to fur- ther educate teachers and students about the differ- ences between municipal government and regional government.
