Town councillors okayed the loan, in principle, under the Towns Municipal Assis- tance Program on Tuesday, ending the Societys seven- year bid to replace the old Acton arena that was torn down by the Town after it built a new arena in Acton East. Councils approval hinges on the Society securing the balance of $350,000 for a $500,000 down pay- ment, getting an updated construction cost estimate from a surveyor and provid- ing rental contracts from building users guaranteeing revenue. That isnt going to be a problem according to Drew Brown, the profes- sional fundraiser hired by the Society to spearhead its ambitious $750,000 fundraising campaign, co-chaired by former coun- cillor Norm Elliott, Halton CAO and Acton resident Brent Marshall and Society building committee chair Jim Pink. Asked if he had any concerns with the Towns conditions Brown said that he was quite confident the Society could raise the money in reasonably short order. The Society already has $250,000 in its building fund and its goal is sig- nifi cantly more than what is required for the fi nancing plan. Brown also said the Trilli- um Foundation was waiting to learn of Town Councils decision on the loan before it dealt with the Societys request for a $100,000 grant to pay for the indoor turf. The Societys plans call for a $1.9-million, 25,600- square-foot building on the footprint of the old arena, and while the main purpose Green light for new Fair Bd. building Council approves $1.3 million loan By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Subject to a number of conditions, the Town will loan the Acton Agricultural Society $1.3-million to help it construct a new multi-purpose building in Prospect Park Continued on page 2 FITTING TRIBUTE: Acton veteran Mary Irwin handed out fl ags to Maria and Mattias Buttwell of Mississauga dur- ing last Thursdays Candlelight Tribute service at the Acton Cenotaph to honour the sacrifi ces of those who served in the cause of freedom and peace.
