BRANCH NO. 197 Police/Fire Report Impaired driver A 47-year-old Cambridge man was arrested for im- paired driving and over 80 after his car missed a turn and ended up hitting a street sign at Queen Street and Eastern Avenue around midnight on Friday Police said a citizen report- ed seeing a Buick Century weaving into on-coming traf- fic and onto the shoulder of Trafalgar Road outside Georgetown. Police were called to the Eastern and Queen Street area where they found the car on the lawn and the sign down. They questioned the man and ar- rested him. He appears in Burlington court on June 6. Intentional fire Halton police are investi- gating an intentionally set fire in a garden shed at 53 Cook Street that was reported at 5:04 on Saturday afternoon. A youth with a garden hose had extinguished the fire in the shed when Acton fire- fighters arrived on the scene, and police found evidence indicating the fire had been deliberately set. Repeat burn Acton firefighters were called to a rural property on 32 Side Road, east of the Town Line, for a burn complaint at 3:35 on Friday afternoon. Firefighters had been to this property in the past for a pre- vious illegal burn, and once again advised the homeowner to let the fire burn out and get a burn permit before doing any more backyard burning. Choking child A nine-month-old Acton baby seemed in good health when Acton firefighters ar- rived at a Mowbray Place house at 9:20 on May 1 for a report of a choking child. The mother reported the baby had gone stiff and stopped breathing. Firefight- ers administered oxygen until the paramedics arrived. Comrades, On Tuesday, May 9. We were afforded a beauti- ful evening last Thursday for the Candlelight Walk, though well attended the turnout of students was disappointing to organizers. Last Saturday afternoon a gathering at the Branch to witness and financially support the cutting off of Norm Martineaus ponytail for Breast Cancer research escalated into a total of six members donating their hair to raise a total of just over $2,000 for this worthy cause. Yours in Comradeship, Peggy Harris, President to Br. 197 LA A 12 classroom addition to Christ the King Secondary School in Georgetown was approved by the Halton Catholic District School at their last regular meeting. Work is to start immediately with a September 2007 opening date targeted for the $2 million project. Acton and area students in the Catholic school system attend Christ the King school. Other projects approved included a new elementary school in Milton for 596 pupils at an estimated cost of $10,200,000 and a new $30 million secondary school in Burlington to ac- commodate 1,000 students. The board also approved extended field trips in 2007 for Christ the King school, one to England and Ireland from March 6-15 and another to Orlando, Florida from May 16-21. JUMPSTART CASH: Members of the Halton Hills Rams Master Lacrosse Club donated $1,000 to the JUMPSTART program in Halton Hills that ensures all children can take part in sports and recreation, even they cant afford it.
