Turn to Page 15 for story. Halton names new Police Chief Halton Police Deputy-chief Gary Crowell has been chosen to succeed retiring Chief Ean Algar and will take over effective June 3. Chief-designate Crowell, who has seven years experience with Halton police, and 28 years with Peel police and the RCMP, was selected in a nationwide search with the help of a recruitment firm. Acton and Regional Councillor Clark Somerville, a member of the Police Services Board that interviewed a phenomenal number of candidates from across Canada, said Crowells experience played a key part in the decision to hire him, along with his commitment to community policing and his leadership skills. The fact that we were able to hire from within (the Service) also shows the depth of talent that we have, Acton Agricultural Society saluted as Citizens of the Year on Friday evening. See Page 6 Somerville said on Tuesday. Deputy Crowells appointment will leave a vacancy in the position of Deputy Chief (the Halton Service has two Deputy Chiefs), and the Board will begin a selection process to fill that position, but in the short-term an acting Deputy Chief will be named. Chief designate Crowell will be officially sworn in at a pomp-filled cer- emony at the police HG on June 19. The New Tanner will be closed on Monday Veterans, neophytes join municipal election race By Frances Niblock There was a small flurry of activity on the political front last week as sev- eral veteran politicians announced plans to seek re-election in the November municipal vote. Veteran Acton and Re- gional Councillor Clark Somerville filed his nomi- nation papers late last week, as did Ward Two (rural Halton Hills) Councillor Joan Robson and Ward Two Councillor Bryan Lewis. In Ward Three, veteran Councillor Moya Johnson is also running again for one of two seats. Challeng- ers include newcomers Phil McBride, David Adair and Dave Kentner, a former Georgetown caterer with a long history of service club and hockey volunteer- ism. Incumbent Councillor Mike Davis has not made his intentions known at press time. Ward Four Councillor Bob Inglis is seeking re- election but will lose his long-time colleague, retir- ing Councillor Ron Chatten. Nominated candidates include Kevin Duggan, John Duncan and Drew Riedstra. In Acton neither local Councillor Mike OLeary or Jon Hurst had filed nomi- nation papers at press time, and Councillor Somerville said he was up for the chal- lenges of the next four years. He said the last term, his first at the Regional Council table, was an incredible learning experience that will help him deal with the issues of the next term, which just last week be- came four years, not three with the November vote. We face the pressures of growth-related issues in the south part of Halton Hills, and we need a full public process for responsible growth, Somerville said on Monday, adding they also need to focus inward on Acton to ensure it is de- veloped to its potential. Trustee redistribution with the Halton District School Board results in Halton Hills being repre- sented by two trustees, not one, following the election one trustee for Wards One and Two (rural and urban Acton), and one for Georgetown. Gillian Tuck-Kutarna and Mike Parkhill are candi- dates for the public school board in Halton and incum- bent Catholic Board Trustee Irene McCauley is also seeking re-election. Nomination forms for the Municipal Election may be filed at the Clerks depart- ment at the Civic Centre in Georgetown from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., until Septem- ber 29, at 5:00 p.m. Clark Somerville TO ITS WORTH THE DRIVE ACTON MOTORS 8531280 2000 DODGE CARAVAN......NICE Rockwood 856-2222 $77/WEEK6 YEARS 2003 LIBERTY SPORT 4x4...44km.......$18,888
