Yours in Comradeship, Peggy Harris, President to Br. 197 LA By Frances Niblock A life that shunned smoking and drinking and embraced hard work, good fun and love of her family proved to be very long and very rich for Actons Edith Jennings who will celebrate her 95th birthday on May 31. Jennings, who moved to Acton in 1937 with her husband Edwin and the fi rst of their four children, remembers Acton as a nice little village. Its still nice, but its too big, but its still home, Jen- nings said on Tuesday from her apartment at the seniors building on Elizabeth Drive on Tuesday, only slightly annoyed about the fuss be- ing made by her family over her special birthday. Jennings and her hus- band Edwin, known as Ed, bought a garage near the corner of Main and Mill Street where the Dollar Stretcher Daze store is now located. We came, and we never were sorry, Jennings said after returning from a week- end family visit to Bancroft where three of her four children settled. It was a great place to work and raise a family. At fi rst we had a house and then we moved upstairs from the garage. The people before us had cars upstairs but we turned it into a play area for the kids and still today I get people telling me that they used to come and play up there, Jen- nings said, adding later it was turned into a bowling alley. Jennings said she some- times longs for that much simpler and gentler time. I knew where my children were, and other mothers knew where their children were. You practi- cally knew everybody in town at that time and today it isnt like that and I dont like that, she said. Jennings, who had two sons and two daughters, has 12 grandchildren, the eldest is 49, and her youngest great-grandchild is 17-months old. She and her husband lived in Eden Mills for almost 20 years until moving back to Acton on Mill Street and then just over a year ago to Elizabeth Drive. Looking back over more than nine decades of life, Jennings said she is most proud of her family and that she was up to it when her adventurous husband decided to leave the Port Perry area and buy a garage in Acton. I always had a place over my head and plenty to eat and I still do. I like it here on Elizabeth Drive, and am in really good heath, except for a touch of the asthma and I have a knee that bothers me once in a while, Jennings said add- ing although shes led a good life with no smoking or drinking, a lot of her longevity is down to just plain luck. Friends are invited to help Jennings celebrate her birthday at an open house on May 27 from 1 to 4 p.m., in the common room at 17 Elizabeth Drive. Best wishes only or a donation to the Eden Mills United Church would be appreciated by the family. Edith Jennings 95 on May 31 LET US WELCOME YOU!
