During the past several weeks, a number of autos have been entered in driveways of unsuspecting citizens. A trend suggested that there is a marked increase in the likelihood your vehicle WILL NOT be entered if you LOCK your car and do not keep valuables in plain view. A common thought is, I would rather have my loose change stolen instead of my window broken. I will not say that thieves will not break your window, because it does happen from time to time. I will say, however, my experiences investigating thefts from auto tends to show that locked cars are left untouched, especially if nothing of value can be seen from the outside. Typically if a street has been victimized by theft, locked cars will not be tam- pered with. The rational reason being, why smash a window and risk getting caught when you can go to the next car and fi nd it unlocked. The point here is lock your car and do not keep valuables in your car. If you fi nd your vehicle has been entered by a thief, please do not touch any disturbed/ moved objects and call police. Even if nothing has been stolen, it is important to notify LOCK IT OR LOSE IT. police that your car has been entered be- cause valuable information can be obtained from the examination of your car. It is time for a reminder to all of Actons citizens, but most especially the chil- dren, to be wary of any animal that is acting strangely. In the Acton area the most common carriers of the rabies virus are foxes, skunks, raccoons and bats. However almost any animal may become infected. Be wary of any animals that appears frightened, vicious, sick or displays any combination of these conditions. If you see any animals that you suspect may have rabies, do not approach it. Call our local animal control officer at 905-877-6235 or contact your local police service. If you or your child should be unfortunate enough to be bitten by any animal, wash the wound with soap and water and apply antiseptic. Report the incident to our Health Department at 1-866-4 HALTON. Rabies can be treated success- fully in humans, with vaccines, as long as the disease is caught before symptoms begin. RABIES Once symptoms are present, rabies is fatal.
