Heres a list of dos and donts: * Plants should not look dried and yellowed on the foli- age. * Look at the vein pattern in the foliage. If the veins are green and the foliage is green, the plants are well watered. If the veins are green and the foliage is yellow, it could be a sign of chlorosis that can be easily remedied with a proper watering and some fertilizer. * Look for signs of disease on leaves or blooms. Its help- ful to be familiar with the plants you are going to purchase so youll know the difference between a healthy and a diseased plant of the species. For example, wilting or curling leaves on a rhododendron can indicate a disease is present. * Observe the roots of the plant if possible. Make sure they look healthy and exhibit no signs of root rot, fungus or disease on the roots. Also, avoid plants that are overgrown in their pots. GORGEOUS GARDENS: Despite a debilitating illness which has robbed him of much of his strength, Master Gardener Max MacSween, with the help of his wife Diane, is able to tinker around his gorgeous gardens at his home on Elmore Drive in Acton. Maxs illness has not dampened his enthusiasm for growing plants. He can weave fascinating stories of the varieties of flowers and shrubs he grows in his gardens. Many of the plants in Acton and area gardens as well as in public gardens near the library and at the entrance to Rotary Park origi- nated from his gardens. Trees properly planted will thrive Youd be surprised at just how important it is to plant a tree correctly. A properly planted tree requires a lot less management than a tree that is planted improperly. More importantly, a tree planted correctly will be healthier and more tolerant of adverse conditions. Before buying your tree, investigate what type will grow well where you live. Consider where the tree will be planted. Will it get a lot SHOP THE MEADOWVILLE NEAR YOU! 265 Edinburgh Rd. N.
