MARCH PAST: Members of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 197 Typhoon Squadron looked sharp as they marched past reviewing officers at the 22nd annual inspection at the Acton Arena/community centre on Sunday. EAGER TO FLY: Flight Sergeant Ryan Martin, named Top Instructor at the Royal Canadian Air Cadets 197 Typhoon Squadron annual inspection on Sunday at the Acton arena community centre, tested his flying skills on a flight simulator . Acton Air Cadets shine at annual inspection on Sunday With well-deserved pride and well-earned confidence, members of the Royal Ca- nadian Air Cadets, 197 Typhoon Squadron strutted their stuff for dignitaries and guests at the annual in- spection at the Acton arena/ community centre on Sun- day. With the inspection, dem- onstrations, cadet speeches and awards to top cadets, it was a chance for proud parents to applaud their chil- dren, some who are learning how to fly in the flight schol- arship program. Cadets, a federally-spon- sored program with no fees, dues or uniform costs, builds leaders, teaches teamwork, leadership, citizenship, self- confidence and physical fitness. Acton has between 40 and 45 cadets, evenly split be- tween girls and boys. They attend a weekly parade at the Acton Legion and the Cadet band also meets weekly. Along with fun, Cadets provides discipline, teaches self-reliance, survival skills and the opportunity to learn how to fly. Legion President Wes Kutasienski, said the in- spection reminded him of his days as a cadet (before most of the cadets present were born) and made him emotional. I look around at this group of young people and I remember times Ive heard people say what is todays youth coming to, Well, if this is an indication were going to be in pretty good shape, he said, prompting drawing long and loud claps and cheers from the guests. Commanding Officer Captain Richard Chapman said its was a great year and praised the Cadets for looking and sounding good and earning record-setting scores. Captain Chapman said it is unusual that all 23 Acton Story and photos by Frances Niblock cadets that were assigned to the summer training they applied for, and for the sec- ond time, two cadets earned flight scholarships. We are investing in everyones future and in to- morrows leaders, Captain Chapman said, thanking all of the people that help make the program a success. Cadets offers 28 cadet summer training centres across Canada including music, leadership, aviation, physical education, survival training. Acton Air Cadets have earned scholarships spon- sored by the Air Cadet League to both Glider and Power Pilot courses which result in the Cadets earning their wings as licenced pri- vate and glider pilots. All of the programming on the parade square, dur- ing a familiarization flight, while teaching younger ca- dets or participating in a sporting event is done with a commitment to the core values of loyalty, profes- sionalism, mutual respect and integrity. She is to make a Guelph Court appearance September 20 to answer to the charges. SPEEDER OF THE WEEK On Friday, June 16 at 2:43am, Constable Steve Hunter of Wellington O.P.P. was conducting speed en- forcement on Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway) at Clair Road in Guelph. The of- ficer observed a 1997 Dodge Caravan travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on Highway 6. He activated his stationary radar and the vehicle entered the beam and recorded a speed of 135-km/ h in a posted 80-km/h zone. A 19-year-old Guelph man faces a speeding charge. Wellington O.P.P.
