New housing allowance available for 90 Halton units Halton Region is inviting landlords to participate in the new Housing Allowance Program, funded under the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program, to assist low and moderate-income households find af- fordable rental housing. Halton has been given funds to subsidize 90 units under this program for five years. In this new program, landlords would offer Halton Region vacant rental units. Halton Region would provide landlords with a monthly subsidy to cover the dif- ference between the amount of rent the tenant can pay and the agreed to market rent for the unit. Tenants in these units would come from the Regions centralized waiting list. The priority under this program is to serve singles and childless couples, so preference will be given to offers of one-bedroom units. Rents must be at or below the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation 2005 average market rents for the Halton area, for example, $853 for a one-bedroom apartment. Landlords are invited to an information meeting about the Housing Allowance Program on Thursday, June 29, 2006 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Halton Regional Centre, Dakota/Glenorchy Room. Interested land- lords can call the Housing Division for more information and to register for the information session. Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline commended the federal and provincial governments on the creation of this new housing program. In developing Halton Regions Comprehensive Housing Strate- gy, we became well aware of the immediate need for rental assistance for people on our waiting list, said Chairman Savoline. We will be able to take advantage of vacant apartment units in Halton to provide af- fordable housing this year.
