Its one of those times its okay to be a senior, Chatten joked as he accepted the Provincial plaque from Mayor Rick Bonnette, noting he hadnt seen his family at the back of the room. Chatten said it was a real honour to receive the award and he really ap- preciated Councils nomination. Offering the award on the provinces behalf, Mayor Rick Bonnette thanked Chatten for his dedication and com- mitment. Chatten, a councillor for 15 years who is retiring in November, has volunteered as a driver for both the Canadian Cancer Society and Red Cross. He led a church youth group and is a past member of the Optimist Club and continues to offer help to community events. I hope you all enjoyed reading a little about the people who can be seen vol- unteering around the town, and at the Acton Seniors Centre. I know I have en- joyed getting to know them all a little better. This week it is Arlene and Bob Bruce, the last in the June series. Anyone who managed to get to either the Gel- lert Centre or the Acton Senior Centre enjoyed trying or watching many of the programs offered. Whether checking out the Taichi demonstrations, the exercise programs, line dancing, trying out the pool in Georgetown for the exer- cise classes, or walking with the mayor. The band from the Georgetown Seniors Centre played mostly sing- along tunes which everyone enjoyed, and the Doo-Wop Band from Acton was pure entertainment, and had us dancing in the aisles. Thank you everyone who helped in any way, or came out and encouraged by watching. The wind-up for the week- long Celebrations was a B.B.Q. and entertainment by the Banjo Man himself, Mel Collie. Everyone who attended the dinner had a great time. I was unable to attend, but many people told me how much they enjoyed the entertainment. Several new members said if they had known how much fun we had they would have joined years ago. The 50/50 draw at the dinner was won by Donna Rowley. Some of the door prize winners were Carol Smith, Bette Footitt, and a lady who was visiting from Holland. Thanks, Victor and your committee for an excellent evening. Wednesday evening saw the June monthly euchre and everyone enjoyed them- selves. The lone hands were held by Mae Lang. High lady was Mae Milton, High man was Don Milton, Sec- ond lady was Pat Stark, and Second man Henry Wedge. The booby was Elmer Dunn, (it was nice to see there were more men playing this week). For all you avid Euchre players yes there will be a game next month on July 19 at 7:15p.m. If there is an interest they will run right through the summer. I have just spotted a trip that will please all railway enthusiasts, planned on Sep- tember 5 to Stouffville where you will hitch a ride on the York Durham Heritage Rail- way to Uxbridge, visit the museum, and have lunch, then on to Lake Scugog to board the MC Woodman a steamboat for a trip along the Trent Severn channel. Sounds wonderful. The wine club is planning to bottle wine on September 13, which means you must get your order in by Au- gust 4. If you are interested call Fern Jory, or pop in to Vintners on Mill Street tell them you are with the Acton Seniors, and place your order. The Seniors hiking club is taking a break for the sum- mer, so this Friday is the last hike. I understand they plan to visit Mt. Nemo and have a picnic. If it is like the last picnic it should be well worth attending. There were no mooners at the Bid Euchre this week. The 50/50 was not won again this week, so the pot should be around $150 by Friday. SENIOR HONOURED: Georgetown Councillor Ron Chatten (centre), with wife Elaine, accepted a plaque honour- ing him as a 2006 Senior of the Year in Ontario from Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette in the council chambers on Monday .
